Hey Panama dude:

You don't get to pick and choose what is on the forum. This is an open discussion. We still practice free speak up here in the States. If it were restricted to political correctness, as you define it, the forum would not be a very good source for information.

Sorry to see this is a personal issue for you. But reality being what it is...life is unfair. Maybe the weavers should get together and uniformlly charge the Gringos coming down higher prices. The hats will only sell in the US what the market will pay. Simple economics. Or maybe you should charge more and pay the weavers more. None of this is the fault of anyone on this forum, or any customer buying a Panama hat.

Go ahead blow some more steam and have the last word. But that is not what the forum is for. Personally, I find you to beating up on every one selling Panama hats who competes with you. Not very good crickit, old man.

JRH chill. In my opinion, this was getting on the personal side. It's not only about free speech, but free market. Bob, is a "straight-up" fella. If you have a beef outside of bad experiences with Bob, you really should take it offline.

Well! I have personally bought hats from Optimo, Brent Black, Panama Bob, Hat Guys (Oakland), and Miller hats.

I have visited FINO FINO in Menlo Park, and Paul's Hatworks in SF.....Michael Harris ..one of the best hatters I have ever seen.
His hats are in the $2500 and up price range.

So folks, here it is: Sellers charge what the marked will bear, profit for them, pay for their rent, supplies, the workers who trim the hats....'cmon...you ever run your own business. Geez, workers compensation insurance in California will KILL you!

So I see Panama Bob as a guy who has an inside track who can find bargains and send them to you at prices that are from a bygone era.

I was NOT ripped off when I got my Panama Bob hat.

My take on this "thread" is that , yes, there are those who attach a high price based upon rairity...and the market will dictate what sells and what does not.

Go into a jewelery store,,the markup is WHOPPING.

And real estate..ask what you want..but something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Please gentlemen..this is a civil discussion and do not get personal.

What's genuine about my Panama hat ?

Last summer I bought a panama hat for 60-70 euros. The hat looks fine but I certainly know that this is no Montecristi!!

Initially I thought that the hat was industrially manufactured in Italy but made ouf of real imported toquilla, hence the mention "genuine" inside the hat.

However, now I just read that it had been handwoven in Ecuador. So i'm wondering : how can the hat have been hand woven in Ecuador and made in Italy ?

Any specialist around ? here are some photos

I'm certainly not a specialist, but I think what they mean is, the body was woven in Ecuador and blocked (shaped) in Italy. I assume that finishing would also include ribbon, sweat band, etc. I see plenty of Panama hats that are hand woven in Ecuador, but listed as made in USA and also Mexico. Oh and it's most likely a Cuenca.

Nice looking hat. I wish the one I ordered had a bow. It only has the loop. I guess I could easily make a bow for it and just slip it in the loop and tack it down a bit.

No expert either......but what he said....lol. Pretty common to buy the body's, then the branding company blocks it, and trims it.....so "makes it"...

When these hats were frist coming into style Ecuador and Panama were both part of Columbia. The name Panama came about because most of the hats shipped out of Panama. So any body woven in Ecuador, Panama or even Columbia can be called Panama. Most hats are blocked and trimmed outside of Panama. We have Panama's finished in the USA, Mexico, Italy and Columbia.

Probably Oregon, California or Colorado....there's a lot of hemp in those states right? ;)

10-4 Roger.......thinking you can smoke it after the season. Might be the perfect hiding place for the stash.....on my head. Cops will never check the lid:eeek:

Ha! Good point! Instead of putting your fist through the hat in September, everyone lights up! Brilliant sales pitch!

I bought a brand new Panama hat a couple of months ago.

When I first received it, it did not have any straws that were jutting out or bristling in the crown area.

However, after wearing it for a couple of months, now it does.

A couple of areas in the crown which used to be flat and smooth now have some straws that bristle and jut out.

Is that normal?

Why is that happening?

Does it indicate a defect in workmanship or anything like that?

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem without damaging the hat during my attempt to fix it?
