Really quite ingenious! Well done, that man. If I were young enough to be thinking of camping that rough I would definitely be out in the backyard cobbling such a set-up together.

I'm no youngster. I'm pushing 50 and my wife is, um, well, younger than that.
Both of us enjoy camping, but neither likes sleeping on the hard gound any more. The hammocks have helped us to still enjoy getting out and away, while not giving up the comfort of sleeping well.
The hammock also makes it easier to start the coffee in the morning. Just have all of the stuff ready to go on the ground near the hammock, lean out to prime the alcochol stove and get the water started, then get back under the covers for a few minutes while the water starts to boil. Nothing like having the first cup while still in bed.

I'm going to have to give this a try. We used to carry pocket hammocks with us in the Marine Corps, but we almost always had trees around. The first time I tried it, I thought for sure that a week of sleeping in a hammock would be murder on my back, but after weeks on end my back never bothered me once. Of course that was 25 years ago...

One thing I did encounter, though, that I'm curious about. When it rained, the rain ran right down the ropes and soaked me all night long. I've heard that a drip line attached up the line will stop that, but do they really work?

Incidentally, I watched this video, which seems pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-Ea73tsxlk What are those poles he found at Lowe's? I've never seen those at Home Depot or Lowe's. Are they just conduit with a tapered end?

I saw this canvas bivvy last year at the Wilderness Gathering, can be used as a hammock or bivvy on the ground seen here using a landrover and metal fencing pole.

I've got a 1970s era jungle hammock that I bought 20 years ago that has -- if I recall correctly -- small black rubber discs mounted on the main lines intended for that purpose. I'm supposing they work fine if set correctly, that is, just inside the dry area created by your overhead cover, I just never had the opportunity to test it in the real world. I need to dig that thing out and see how the years have treated it.

I had one of those, too. Unfortunately we had some bad apples in my unit at the time, and before I even got to try it out, someone lifted it out of my locker. Cut the lock to get to my gear, and pretty much emptied my locker. Someone from my own unit!
