Hey guys,
I’m looking at possibly buying a used jacket from Australia and shipping to the USA. Are there import duties due on a used item like this? I’ve just never done it so didn’t want any surprises.
Thanks!!
HC

I have bought several used jackets from Australia and other countries and never been hit by USA import duties.

I’ve sold a bunch of jackets to people in the USA. Whilst I can’t speak with certainty about import duties on that side of the pond, none of the people I’ve sold to have ever complained about import duties.

There are no import taxes or customs fees in the USA, Unless you are a business importing large amounts of the same product for resale. Personal items purchased or small amounts of goods are not taxed by the US Government. One of the great things about living in the USA! You could buy a $2000 jacket and pay $0 in customs fees.

I wish the UK would switch to the same policy. It would be an economic boom for many companies in the US.

Thanks guys I appreciate all the feedback. My one experience with buying a jacket from overseas was a new aero from the UK a few years ago and I recall getting hit with some taxes.

15 years of importing and exporting new and original vintage style jackets, knits, zippers, etc, and I have never been taxed.

It is actually in the customs regulations someplace. I have read them. I don't have a link at the moment. I will check into it.

Sometimes companies will charge handling fees or not put enough postage on the shipment. That can cause some fees to be owed. I have not heard of duties being charged on shipped goods.

Just got this quickie off of Google. It appears that as long as it is purchased off the Internet, you can go up to $1,600 duty free. After that it is murky but looks like a 3% charge is possible.
How much was the Aero?
Mailing and Shipping Goods - Customs Duty Guidance
  • Up to $1,600 in goods will be duty-free under your personal exemption if the merchandise is from an IP.
  • Up to $800 in goods will be duty-free if it is from a CBI or Andean country.
  • Any additional amount, up to $1,000, in goods will be dutiable at a flat rate (3%).
It appears that there are US custom charges (3%) however, the personal exemption amounts are large. As long as you don't go above $1600, there should be no fees. Note: Shipping charges are usually added to the value of the item.

Thanks! Yes I will re read. I read this 10 years ago so things may have changed. With not ever being charged, I never felt the need to go and read more. If I had to pay fees, rest assured, I would be combing through the regulations with a magnifying glass.

Really? How expensive was your jacket, and how much did you have to pay, approximately?

Anything valued above £35 (including postage) from outside of the EU gets taxed at the moment in the UK. It’s quite a revenue I can’t foresee being dropped anytime soon.
