Ive seen a really nice brown fedora and Im thinking of buying it. However Im not too sure wheather it would look ok with either a charcol gery or black pinstripe suit. I think it might look ok, but Im curious to hear about other peoples views on this.

Thanks in advance

I think I've seen on FL brown with a light grey plaid suit somewhere. For me I don't mix the two, but that is out of cowardice.

Depends on the brown and the band. If its an orangy brown, I don't think it'll work, but if its more of a chocolate brown it could. Also if the band is black then it would work.

I agree that a darker "chocolate" brown would probably be more flexible. It's probably a matter of preference as well. I've never really mixed blues and browns.

I've seen many vintage photos of Gray and Brown together.

Here is a photo with Paddy and me last year on the Queen Mary (photo by SlimPortly).

Charcoal gray and chocolate brown I would do in a NY minute, picture gray flannels and a nice rich brown leather belt or briefcase. Probably not black though, especially pinstripe, not sure why. A black ribbon on the hat might change that. Scion, you've got to try brown and blue together, especially with a fair complexion. I have a dark chocolate brown suit and robin's-egg-blue shirt w/brown pinstripe that are perfect together. Put on a brown hat and an oxblood tie, and you're good to go....

I sometimes wear a brown lid with a charcoal gray suit but only when brown accessories (shoes, belt, watch band, outerwear, etc..) are added to the ensemble. Otherwise, I would wear a gray or black hat, same as I would with a black pinstripe suit.

I personally think 90% of making various colour combos work is confidence. Or, in my case (being colour blind), ignorance.

Maybe so, but times are different now. Actually the hat-suit combos in the photo work well; that color brown probably could go with lots of suits except black. But I wouldn't be as free today as in the old movies and pictures. I say that having tried and rejected some combos in the mirror. Yes, for example you have Jimmy Stewart in a chocolote brown fedora in his 50s movies with any kind of suit, and that looks good. But when I tried it myself, dark brown hat and blue suit didn't work. Depends on the combo, but I would let the mirror be the judge, and I don't think one can be as free to mix and match colors now as in the 40s and 50s when every man wore a hat every time they he out the door.

Go for it!

I saw an old movie the other night set in WW2 Europe and one of the charactors wore a black suit with a chocolate fedora.

I thought it looked great and not at all incongruous.

As someone who wears a lot of black and owns only black, grey and tan hats I'm now leaning toward something in a deep brown for my next purchase.

I have seen dozens of Freemasons in London with their dark to black suits and shoes and they all wore a grown hat, which seems to be by far the most common colour amongst such people here.
