Even in the 1960s and into the 1970s, half the workmen you saw still dressed like this where I lived. If he'd delivered coal to my house in 1972, I wouldn't have been surprised.
Seeing the double breasted waistcoat, I immediately thought of this one from 'Peaky Blinders':
Very keen on that shirt. I vaguely remember a time when my parents still had coal delivered; I'm sure the coalman wore a jerkin like that. This was around the very early eighties; by 82/83, my dad was buying it in bulk and driving it home. Don't recall the last time I saw a coal truck doing home delvieries. Or a coaltruck, for that matter

I still have coal delivered. In fact until a couple of years ago he was still using a 1954 Austin k9 lorry, the very one shown here View attachment 19721
