Well, this is a pretty wide brim I have... a Mallory 20:

Late 30s vintage, if one wears it to one side, it helps out a lot! Looks like you're wearing a hat, and not a hat wearing you! lol

Actually, that looks a lot like the Camptown, and I definitely advocate wearing hats with a tilt. I'm wearing it today, and it seems OK to me. I'm also testing out wearing a felt in SoCal. It's only supposed to be in the low 80s today.

Hello,

I feel the problem (if there is one, because personal taste plays a part always) lies more in the low crown - wide brim balance than in the wide brim on its own.

Tilting the hat to one side helps to compensate a brim width perceived as excessive; as does pushing the hat back. Both of these break the paralelism which the brim of a hat planted straight on the head forms in respect of the shoulder line.

Clothes do have something to do too. A garment with emphasized shoulders, like a suit jacket, compensates for a wide brim too, better than does "shirtsleeve order".

Of course the build of your own shoulders is important too! ;)

My 2 cents anyway.

Regards,

Daniel

I feel wider brimmed hats are more practical... I do own a number of shorter brimmed hats from the early 30s, but, I also have some wide brimmed models from the mid to late 30s and early 40s.

This rule applies to vintage hats mostly... I never cut the brim on a hat! It's about respecting an antique piece of history for me. However, since the hat isn't vintage, it's really your choice.

But, I'd stay away from a dimensional cut... never cared for that look... and if you wanna steer clear from a "cowboy" look, then leave it alone.
