Thanks, Lucas... These are beautiful hats, and... After sorting through hundreds of vintage hats... mostly Adam, Stetson, Lee, and Schoble brands... I can tell you that very few are anywhere close to a Cavanagh Edge. These 2 hats are the first confirmed by Mr. Bowers, and I only have 2-3 more of this rare breed.

Considering the fact that my hats are "Deadstock", unsold inventory, I believe this amazing edge was either highly popular, or it was too expensive to be copied by the other big manufacturers, such as Stetson, Lee and Adam (the ultimate copy cats).

Are they all Schnoble, or did you find some in other brands?

Nearly all of the major manufacturers offered this edge, including Stetson (Selv-Edge/Mode Edge) and Lee (Edgelee), but I can't find anything in my notes to suggest Adam offered it. I don't think Champ did, either, but then both were lower-priced brands, so it goes against their grain, so to speak.

Yes, it was expensive to produce, which is why the numbers are relatively few among total hat production, but it also had a measure of popularity, which is why so many manufacturers offered it. I'd say both reasons help explain why you didn't find very many.

None of them...

I didn't find any of the other hats with the Cav-edge. I do have one Adam with a faux-Cav Edge (as we have discussed) but the Schoble hats are the only true Cavanagh edge hats that I've found.

By the way... Can I ask why you call them Schnoble, instead of Schoble?

The hat is made of very thin felt. The brim goes out, folds under, then up inside the crown where it is sewn back to the body of the hat. The seam is covered by the sweatband, the stitching by the ribbon. Essentially an underwelt that's wider than the brim. Makes for a very neat, smooth brim edge.

A bit, yes. This Mossant is the only hat I've run across with this finish. Is hatco currently producing anything with it?

currently no. I don't think there would be much of a demand for such a hat and the extra cost associated with it.

Neat hat, Dinerman. Somewhere, sometime in the last few months, I ran across a reference to either a C&K or Dobbs double-brim hat, but I can't think of where I saw it.

Nice to see an real example of one.

This Lembert is the opposite. The bottom section (different felt type) fills the whole inside of the hat.
