I changed out the thin brass Aero zipper on my black FQHH HB Deluxe for a thicker nickel one. I preferred the more understated look of the brass, but wanted something more substantial to hang on to. Nickel against black is a bolder look.
I bought a used black FQHH Highwayman from Aero a while back - came with brass zippers. Although I never would have ordered it that way I think it looks much nicer than black with nickel zippers (which I had on my black 30s halfbelt from Insurrection that I ended up selling).
There was a thread on this topic not too long ago. I think most preferred the nickel. I have both on my black MC jackets, but my preference is the understated brass. That's the way I now order them.
Depends what you want in terms of overall look. Both were common back in the day. I have the shiny brass standard on my Highwayman, and I prefer that, but if you want the more full-on "Ton-Up Boy" / Ace Cafe look, the nickel is the way to go. I'm not clear on when the overly-chunky zips thing became the norm in motorcycle jackets... Seems to me it was some time in the Seventies?
Seeing all three types together, I felt the shiny brass was a bit to, well, shiny. To me, the nickel would give a cleaner, sharper overall look - a la Daniel Craig's jacket - while the antique brass is much more low-key, softer feel. I'd be tempted towards the former.
Have both also & prefer the antique brass = more muted. I have 1 brown leather jacket with nickel hardware & would really prefer antique brass. Maybe someday I'll have it swapped. Also, I don't mind the nickel with my black jackets as much.
I'm in the same boat with a black cafe racer with collar I've just ordered, initially I wanted antique brass but have since changed to nickel. I agree with others that the brass is more understated, so it depends on the jacket. For a Highwayman or Half Belt I'd likely go for antique brass.
When I said the "understated brass." I guess the proper term is Antique Brass. Thanks Sloan. You look a bit like a fellow named Ziggy I used to know, back in the 70s.
