And vice-versa, Bugsy. Especially vice-versa.

I agree, if you're speaking of the masses but some of the best dressmakers in history have been men.

As a tailor I have no qualms about jumping into a discussion on men's furnishings. As I look around the public library today, I see that many women also know precious little about women's clothing!

Who would wear braces over a vest ?
Not sure I could wear them under the vest.
Keep in mind that when nature calls, you will have to remove the vest to get at th suspenders.
Its moments like that, when we realize why it takes ladies so much time in the loo.

Part of the reason that one sees so few well dressed women is that there are few rules in women's wear, thus there's a greater chance for disaster. Also, most woman are like lemmings following every seasonal trend, instead of working to develop their own personal style.

And this is why the Great Depression was much less damaging to the ladieswear industry than to the menswear business. From 1930 to 1933, the U.S. men's apparel industry practically shut down. (Esquire magazine helped to save it, by the way.)

(Yes, American tuxedo trousers in the 1920s and '30s usually had belt loops. Go figure.)

Intersting to hear that... my current ones do, and I'd assumed that it was a modern affectation. Glad to know they have some classic element to them, then! :)

I know a lot of folks don't like belts with tux trews, but they sure do make them sit on me a lot better than the side tab trousers do!

My father, b.1924, said 'spenders should be worn under the vest. Wearing them over the vest would be like a gal wearing a brassiere over the blouse, which I'm sure is being done even as I type this but I don't want to know about it.

Absolutely.

I would have presumed the whole notion of braces being "meant to be seen" is a modern affectation as they are nowadays typically worn to be seen (I remember school and unversity black tie dos where novelty coloured braces were considered de riguer by many as a sartorial alternative to a waistcoat or cummerbund), as opposed to a necessity to hold your trousers up!
