Bow Ties

One of the things that has put me off is the new Dr Who wearing them. Just when I was thinking how nice it would be to wear a bow tie from time to time and had taught myself to tie them, along comes another cultural reference that people would assume you are trying to emulate.

There will always be someone who thinks you're trying to be somebody else. Bows may get the Doctor, hats Indy, long coats Bogey, bowlers Chaplain. Wear the bow and be yourself.

I found an ebay seller that makes her own bowties. The name of her ebay store is Panda's Sewing Creations . I bought a blue satin one and a dark grey cotton one, two weeks ago and it was very well made. I ordered four more that should be coming in any time now. Service is fast. Her bowties range from flashy colors to more somber ones and she makes most of them out of cotton or satin. Just thought I'd throw this out there.

I have taken a look. Some questions for you, Ernest. Seller says...
"You can choose between buttons on the neck band to adjust the tie or,no buttons for a one length neck band.
The neck band will fit a 18" to a 14" neck."
So, are the bow ties adjustable by means of a button? Not the usual slide?
What about this other statement...
"THIS TIE IS NO LONGER SEWED ON THE OUTSIDE EXCEPT ON THE ENDS, IT IS IRONED & PRESSED TO HOLD SHAPE."
Surely it must be sewn along the sides too? It must have a seam, right?
What width are those ties?

Regards!

Thanks Nick. I know you are right. I will wear a bow tie to work on Friday.

I'm guessing they were originally edge stitched, like the collar of a shirt, but aren't any more except the band.

I have one bow with button adjustment. It's better than the usual modern sliders, which are too thick in the back, but the buttonholes tend to become distended over time because they're vertical and not horizontal.

The ties I got are both 1 7/8. She uses small plastic snaps to adjust them. They do have a seem along the sides as well as the one at the end which is visible; as opposed to most tie makers that hide the seam.

Thank you all for the info on button-adjustable bowties. I don't think I have one with that system.

With all the recent activity in this thread I have become somewhat inspired...

Hey! What about making tomorrow a FL Bowtie Friday?

The idea is simple: let's wear a bowtie tomorrow, and post a pic here in the thread. We could even make it a custom.

I will do:D.

What about this

Ok, guys, this thread has really got me thinking. I may be the odd duck where I live now, the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. But, I grew up in the South. I've always liked bow-ties but haven't really considered them as looking good on me. Now that I'm older, and don't really care as much about what people think, I'm thinking about getting one.

I have a brown suite that still fits, and I'm thinking about getting a bow-tie for it. I'm thinking I could wear the following bow-tie with my brown suite and a blue shirt. What do you guys think?

Also, does anyone know about this vendor?

I think they are called Greatbows.

Now, I will attempt to post a pick or two with the brown suite. My digital camera skills are little more than a 3 YO so I hope this turns out.

Ok, looks like the photos suck, but here they are: One

Hmmmm, it actually looks more blue than brown. I hope this actually is my brown suite. I may have to rummage thought the closet a little more till I find it. I think the color is more correct in the top photo.

If not, what would this bow-tie go with?

when i first learnt to tie a bow tie ,my father advised me to practise tying it in the dark for 5 minutes a day for a week.In later years people were always amazed at my ability to tie it without a mirror, almost as if it were a magic trick!Still the mark of a gentleman, the ability to tie one on....haha!

I, for one, think that tie would go great with the brown suit and blue shirt. The suit does look blue in the second pic.

Nice!:eusa_clap You did a nice job tying it too.
My son opted for the bowtie for Thanksgiving. I wore a regular tie with balloons, a martini, smoking cigarette and shapely lady coming from the smoke on the tie. My son's brown tie matched his double breasted brown jacket. :D

Thank you Sir! I visited my mom and she wanted to tie a silk scarf in the manner of a tie. I was showing my mom how I tie a regular tie and I kinda think a bowtie is easier than a regular tie. After I showed her, I put my bowtie back on and suprised myself in how easily I tied it without looking in a mirror.
