The logo shows up on a 1902 poster, but to my knowledge that’s the only point we have it located.

So you're the one who outbid me! It ended up being too rich for my blood anyway jumping $400 in the last five seconds of the auction. Congrats on nabbing that one. Does anyone know what year range that star logo on the sweatband was in use?

A true Stetson Austral Clear Nutria, model and Block # 684. 4 1/2 inch Depth. Lot # 6877. Ribbon is 1 1/8 inches, has 3 inch brim. This hat dates about 1934, per another hat just 1 Lot Number away that has an NRA tag in it....Other hats on the Lounge that are being called Australs, but have Block Number 424, are not Australs, they are the Laloo model, as is shown in the Stetson ad attached here, which shows the Austral and Laloo side by side.

Stetson Austral shown in the 1937 Stockman-Farmer catalog on pg 8 of The Stetson Way thread. The hat shown is Number 1 Quality. Note the crown shaping. In this example, seems they put a circular dent in all 4 sides- front, back, and each side. In a Miller Stockman catalog from about the same date, it says that Forest Rangers had adopted the Austral style hat as their own because it was a practical Western hat. In that particular ad, it gives 4 3/4 inches as the crown height, instead of 4 1/2, for some reason.

Just received this beautiful, what I believe to be a Boss of The Plains, in the mail. The hat came with a purple fabric wrapped around it and stampede straps basically stapled into the hat. I was hoping that there was a chance that the original ribbon would be hidden underneath the purple fabric- to my surprise I was right! The sweatband was missing but the block tags still in tact. The crown had some old crease marks in it and could use some structure, so using a variety of blocks and hand work, I did my best to reestablish the open crown. (since I dont have a BOP block)

I removed the fabric and stampede straps and sewed in a new 2" wide sweatband. quick brush off...Fits great!

The brim is very dense felt and super stiff. Im assuming this is a clear nutria based on a comparison I did to another in my collection from around the same time period.

Not bad for $70!
