He has a really good looking Maltese Falcon lid, but I'm not so sure about the top being dished in like you're talking about, because none of his pictures show the top dent.

I think this is what you're talking about.

Here's the Golden Era page about that hat.

Cav?

Always looked like a Cavanagh in stills (don't remember
how it moves in the movie). Looks like that thick felt
with a Cavanagh Edge. The way that crown folds and holds-
the only hat I have with a similar bash is a Cav. It would
be interesting to see the underside of the edge and a
close-up of the bow (to see if the back edge is rough,
which many Cavanagh hats feature).

I have a really nice, sharp original still from The Maltese Falcon,
but it is the scene where they are unwrapping the Falcon
and everyone has taken their hats off.

I guess I'll chime in here... especially after that last post. While I don't have pictures to post, I do have a grey cavanagh, which was shaped by Optimo (thanks to our very own Zohar aka Nathan) to look like the Maltese Falcon lid. If I get a chance, I might try to get some pictures (since all the ones I had were lost when my hard drive died). I'll try to do that soon actually :)

For the experts, here are shots of the liner from the DVD...this is from the scene in the DA's office, right after he stands up to leave and picks up his hat.

The diagonal script below the logo running upward is the same manner in which Borsalino placed their name in the liners of their hats.

I love this look, and I tried to get it with several hats but to no avail until I scored a '40s Royal Stetson.

This hat has a thinner felt, which lends itself to that "crumpled" look. I think that is the secret - thinner felt. My other high-crown hats just didn't react the same way.

Although my Stetson is similar to Bogie's hat in "The Maltese Falcon", it is much, much closer to the one he wore in "Casablanca".

Get yourself some vintage felt and you'll probably be able to pull it off.

That being said, MK has mentioned in several threads that his hat from Optimo is a spot-on reproduction.
