I was just in Barron's Hats in Burbank and they had a box full of brand new boaters. I was a little suprized. Dont know where they were from but they were brand new. May have been for a movie.

The is only one factory left that makes these hats . They are in Italy . EVERYONE buys from him so dont be fooled by advertisments saying that one place is different than the next . They make them in two brim sizes as well.

Apparently there is just one guy making boaters and he is in Italy.

Others may have more detail.

Just bought my first boater today. (Looks exactly like this one.) And, what a surprise, it was made in Italy!

So few people wear them (I, for one, have never seen anyone wearing a boater) that you would think there would be no market for higher quality, hand-made boaters.

I guess this post wasn't really informative. Sorry.

I just got a boater just like that a week or two ago. The straw construction seems similar to vintage ones, although mine is not as stiff and the color is lighter. Most likely as they age the color becomes more brown and they get even stiffer. The only thing I don't really care for about the modern hat is the sweatband, which has a sort of strange method of being sewn in, I guess for ventilation or sizing, I don't know.

Gents,

Okay, okay...so one, where do I get it and how much should I be looking to spend?

It looks like the link Sharpetoys posted is a good deal. I bought mine through my local hatter, and paid about the same price as they are selling on that web site. I doubt I will wear mine often enough to sweat through the hat, so I figured $80 wasn't a bad price at all for something I should get years of usage out of.

You can order the same hat through www.millerhats.com, but it's a little pricier there.
