First hat that I’ve bought in quite a while & it was delivered just in time for a snow storm. Empire State Hats boater in a size that actually fits my giant head. Black ribbon & hat are in overall good shape - but the sweat is pretty rough. It is absorbing a dose of Pecard’s right now, but it may be too late.

I’ve owned a couple of boaters over the years, most recently a Brooks Brothers model I bought in late 80s. It was a nice hat, but was too small. I bought this one because of its size and proportions - newer ones seem to have brims that are too small for my taste.

You are right, Steve, but it almost feels like it here in central Texas. After ice, snow and no electricity or water most of last week, we were at 74F today, so we have had a 76F temperature difference in 7 days!

I found an envelope of large format (6" x 4") negatives in the box of slides my folks gave me. They were photos from the 1920s -1930s of my Dad's family. I didn't have a slide scanner that could handle this size, so I found a phone app that would "scan" it. I don't remember seeing my Grandfather dressed up very often so I was thrilled to find him sporting a boater! In the pic are my paternal Grandfather (holding my Uncle), my Grandmother (holding my Dad) and my Aunt (from an earlier marriage) sitting next to them. 1932.

That is a wonderful family photo, Bob. Your Grandfather's Boater looks absolutely spiffing. It would be one super family heirloom.
I bet you and yours are enjoying seeing all the old negatives come back to life with or without hats.

Thanks Steve! I've not see these pics before so they are all a thrill. I hope my Mom can identify those folks that I don't recognize as my Dad (the last survivor of his siblings) is deep into Alzheimers. I'll drop another photo of Grandpa over in the "Caps" thread.

I recently got a new Ponte Rialto and I'm happy with the fit, but the proportions seem off due the the crown height. Some experimentation suggests that a wider band would help, ideally 2 1/2 inches or even more.

Does anyone have a favorite ribbon source? Google hasn't yielded many contenders.

I'm ”new” to the lounge(just registered an account but always silently peek the threads)
I have recently acquired a straw boater, but don't know much about this type of boater since it's much lighter than my usual ones. The condition is nearly perfect with a small broken chip under the brim, I'm wondering if anyone could date this particular hat?

Can’t help on the dating, but that’s a Yeddo straw hat. They were made, as far as I know, in Switzerland. They wove hats that were finished by many different hat companies. I’m sure others here will know more.
