Boater faction!

Thank you Steve!

Here is a Dobbs boater using a sewn braid construction of soft straw. It is very flexible, with the brim shape held by the use of an unusual rolled edge. I've not seen another like it. It can be dated quite reliably to the 1920s from the Dobbs store location ephemera collected by Brad Bowers. I selected this hat to wear to my daughter's wedding three years ago - perhaps not the perfect choice but it is very comfortable and I was encouraged by knowing that no one would be looking at me.

Nice hat! You don't see that straw anymore.

I'm back, by the way. It's been over a year. I no longer have my nice antique Adams boater. Now I have a nice new Olney that doesn't smell.

Picture shows the Love Good Culture team in Nashville, trying on the city for size. It's a 7 1/8 (oops, that's my hat.)

I find the bon-Ton ivy floating sweatbands to be comfortable. I don’t think that boaters are the most versatile hats, but they fill a nice niche. The Yeddo hats like Bill’s are favorites.

I have a nice one, but it is still in Texas. It is one of the hats I didn't have enough room for last time I went.

This Yeddo should be on its way tomorrow. BTW what is the difference between a boater and a skimmer?

It arrived today. Brim is 2 1/2", crown is 3 1/4", and ribbon is 2 1/8" black. This is my second boater with both being Yeddo. I have never held any other so don't have any real experience. But boaters look like they should be very stiff which is not the case with either of the two I own.

This was the first boater I bought. The sweatband needed to be re-stitched and the solid black ribbon was toast. I sent it to Mike Miller. He has re-stitched the sweatband and replaced the ribbon with this brown vintage ribbon I got from Art Fawcett. He sent this picture yesterday.

First of two end of season boater acquisitions. Swiss made Yeddo by Georges Meyer:

Specs:
2-1/2" Brim
3-7/16" Crown
1-7/8" Ribbon
5.0oz Weight
As others have commented, the Yeddo isn't as stiff as I was expecting. The electric blue pinstripes seems a bit progressive, so this will probably end up more for casual wear.

Quick shot before putting away for the season:

The second acquisition was an extremely fortuitous find. Stetson with a beautiful plaited weave:

Specs:
2-3/4" Brim
3-7/16" Crown
1-3/4" Ribbon
5.4oz Weight

After seeing a picture of a Dunlap hatbox I decided to go check out a weekly consignment auction. Always a roll of the dice as often times it's just an empty box. There was a hat inside, but it was a damaged POS no name straw. Dejected, I walked through the rest of the pole building and stumbled across this wonderful hat which hadn't been displayed on the auction listing photo collection.

The hat is in mint condition, though with a 2-3/4" brim it's definitely handle with care. Compared to my other boaters this one feels more delicate. The black, red, and gold coloration on the ribbon is a bit more conservative and traditional. Interesting to note what appears to be a typo between the number on the cloth tag and the number stamped on the sweat (0 vs 1).

This one will probably be reserved for dressier occasions, but a quick shot before putting away for the season:

Here are some better pictures of the Stevenson boater I recently acquired. It is labeled a size 7 but I thought it was more a 7 1/8 to 1/4 based on the pictures from the seller. Anyway, it's in fantastic shape. It does fit my head but a little snug. It fits like a snug 7 1/8. I'm still trying to determine age. I'm thinking 20s/30s?
Brim 2 3/8"
Ribbon 2 1/4"
Crown 3 1/2"
