A few posts back I talked about an event organized by the city I work for

"Le Banquet Républicain", a big lunch with a lot of festivities

There was 5000 people attending the event and we offered each person a boater

Here I am in my boater on its maiden voyage, Independence Day 2010. It seemed to make an impression.

Cordite Blues

You wear it well sir, and there is no better day of the year to try out a good boater.

Happy 4th of July Holiday Weekend. Great time to wear the boaters. Wore mine the whole time. Today I went to Greektown in Detroit. Got 4 compliments and only one obvious snicker. But, that came from a teenage boy wearing a tee shirt down to his knees with his shorts ending just below that, a kind of tank top. Not exactly one to give out fashion lessons. So, that was to be ignored.

Best compliment today was a man walking on the street in the opposite direction who said, "Sir, that is a beautiful hat!" I have to admire his taste.

Please tell us more about the boaters...or maybe a close-up pic of one?

Here is one I just bought. I need to replace the ribbon.

With a new ribbon that will indeed be one fine looking hat, it looks like it has a very nice weave to it.
Great photos; your tie’s color matches that hat perfectly.

It's not the suit that makes me look that fat. It's my big fat gut.

20 pounds down, 40 to go.

I'm thinking a red and blue striped ribbon similar to Cordite Blues.

lol lol lol Some of us are in the same boat on that.

Red and blue would be nice and classic. I have to say a quality brown ribbon wouldn't look too bad though either.

I reckon you people in the know can tell me if this boater is worth the money; it's on offer at a vintage market and I'm considering going back tomorrow to get it. The dealer said she'd take $25, is that a good deal?

Size matters. If it's a 7 1/4 or bigger, it's a good buy. 7 1/8 or smaller and you may or may not get your money back.

Good point, Lefty. I wonder if boaters can be stretched?

It fit my husband, and I'm kind of hoping to convince him to wear it to the Gatsby Picnic (though that'll be in October - perhaps past boater season?). I figure if he doesn't take to it, I might just make it mine.......
