Boat Shoes

Good day all,

I'm looking into acquiring a pair of boat shoes for the coming summer. I want a good quality shoe that will last. I think I've narrowed it down to two possibilities, but would like to hear your input on them before I make a decision.

I know Allen Edmonds is a well respected brand but the Eastports are one of their non-American made shoes and are not recraftable.

I don't really know anything about Sebago other then that they are apparently known for their boat shoes. I believe I read that they are also not manufactured in the states. Another very minor consideration is that I will be wearing the shoes with socks (even if just a no-show liner sock) so I'm not sure how that could influence sizing.

I've owned a pair of the Sebagoes for about 10 years and they're pretty good. Most deck shoes aren't rec-raftable now days. I did get a new sole put on an old pair of deck shoes, but it was lug soles, not deck shoe bottoms. My shoe repairman said that no one sells deck shoe soles anymore. Allen Edmonds is a great brand, but they're not known for deck shoes and Sebago is. In addition, they're deck shoes not wing tips. I wouldn't blow the big bucks on these.

Just my $0.02 and I am cheap.

Over the last fifty or so years, I've spent a whole bunch of time on the ocean. I've tried about every kind of boat shoe there is. For warm weather wear, here's the best value I've ever found. They're every bit as good as Topsiders but they're two thirds the price. They stick to a wet fiberglass deck like glue. They're comfortable and have good arch support. They won't scuff the white topside of your boat. Soak them and they dry quickly. They've got mesh sides that ventilate your sweaty feet. Fish guts wash off of them easily. They float in salt water...at least long enough to gaff them back into the boat.

I wore boat shoes from Russell Moccasin growing up but I've long since switched to Mephisto. Very comfy.

Wow, the fact you actually wear these while *boating* is awesome! Usually, I only see boat shoes worn by waspy Ivy League guys I work with, who wear these as their default casual Fridays shoe.
