Given the exchange rate at the moment, one might do better buying from one of the fine custom hatters in the U.S. as opposed to seeking a U.K. hatter. Gary White or Art Fawcett do leap to mind. Nota bene, however, Gary White does not communicate via the internet or e-mail, he prefers to speak with you on the telephone.

There certainly are more than just a few great hatters in the US, there is no doubt about that. I've always thought it strange that in a matter of such a "artisan" industry as (custom) hatmaking, the USA would -today- lead the world...but...they do! One isn't surprised at America spearheading more technological activities, and there ... well, they don't necessarily always lead! It's a paradox. I think it has to do with ...the relatively low cost of labor ("social cost", taxes), the existence of a large geographical market, the widespread practical application of the internet for commercial purposes, etc.

But...still waiting for that genius UK (French, German, ...Belgian... European) hatter.

I seem to remember that a lot of hat making tools were destroyed in Britain during labor unrest sometime back. I don't know if there is really much of a hatting industry left.:(

I remember one of the articles on Optimo said that Graham was thinking about opening a shop in Europe.

I think Steve's European counterpart for Adventurebuilt, Marc, is somewhere in Europe. Germany perhaps?

And there was some German bespoke hatter I seem so remember seeing a thread on, with videos showing how hats are made. Can't remember the name though.

Mark Kitter is located in the Flensburg area. For the German speaking folks, here is a radio interview with Mark

That was the maker I meant, just couldn't remember the name. On the whole I find that the few modern German hats I've seen are of very good quality. I have a (now too small) Wegener hat and it's fantastically durable. And the Maysers I saw in a shop seemed to be quite nice.
