Well, Brian has his own ways. His pipes aren't what they were. (But then, whose are?) And he's long been at least a bit awkward in front of a crowd. Way, way back when, Glen Campbell toured with the band, in Brian's stead, while Brian stayed behind working on new material and/or hiding out.

The couple of times I've seen him perform in recent years, with the Wondermints, he loosened up as the show ran on. He wrote so many big, big hits that it's hard to get what everybody wants to hear into one show. But he manages to hit the audience with one after another after another until they're pretty well worn out by the end. I was most struck by the age span in the audience -- great-grandmas and grandpas and pre-adolescents and everywhere in between.

Wish I could've caught one of the shows on the "Smile" tour a few years back. The dewy-eyed bride okayed the funds to get me to the nearest stop on the tour -- in San Francisco, as I recall -- but I couldn't see spending that kind of money.

I saw Brian on the Smile tour about 3 years ago...It was amazing. He had a way bigger back-up band than he actually needed...but man oh man it was great hearing him sing...highlight for me was "In My Room."

I also saw "The Beach Boys" around '94 or so...John Stamos was on drums at the time. I love Mike Love's voice, so it was really cool also...but seeing Brian on the Smile tour was better!

I saw Brian on the Smile tour about 3 years ago...It was amazing. He had a way bigger back-up band than he actually needed...but man oh man it was great hearing him sing...highlight for me was "In My Room."

I also saw "The Beach Boys" around '94 or so...John Stamos was on drums at the time. I love Mike Love's voice, so it was really cool also...but seeing Brian on the Smile tour was better!

"In My Room" is a beautiful ballad & one of my favorites...although not from their genius psychadelic work of "Smile", it was foreshadowing the experimental style to come after their best album, Pet Sounds.

I know the Beach Boys took up the Pendleton look because it was fashionable at the time but how did that happen? In other words how were Pendleton shirts hip in So Cal in 1960? They don't look like beach wear they look like something from the grunge era.

I think the popularity of Pendleton shirts in Cali, or the west cost for that matter probably goes back to miners, loggers, farmers. The shirts do last a long time and you can find an abundance of them in California used/vintage clothing stores. I am assuming for surfers it probably started by finding them cheap second hand, and needing them because California beaches can be pretty windy/chilly sometimes, then the look just caught on. It seems to me that you have Pendleton on the west coast and Woolrich or Johnson Woolen Mills on the east coast and I think all those brands originally catered to the same working class or hunter/outdoorsy clients.

Believe it or not, before wetsuits, dudes would surf in khakis and pendleton shirts. This is a big part of Socal surfer lore.

Wool keeps you warm, even if it gets wet. Pendleton's wool is 100%, as opposed to other brands like Woolrich, which are a polyester blend. Pendleton wool is very light and extremely soft, which feels comfortable against your skin. The blends tend to be bulky, rough, and itchy. You do not want to put on a Woolrich Stag Shirt if you just got out of the water. Try it. Wet yourself in the shower, then put on a Pendleton. Ever wonder why Pendleton makes a wool robe, and Woolrich doesn't? Take an old Pendleton, hem the sleeves into short sleeves, or cut them off completely. You've got an instant beach shirt. Geography probably had the most to do with Pendleton's popularity on The Left Coast. Pendleton is from Oregon. As a kid, we got our shirts from the Pendleton store downtown. Why not Johnson or Woolrich? In the dark days before the internet and Wal*Mart, Woolrich, Johnson, and Bemidji did not have stores downtown.

The ex-girlfriend turned up today with one of those Original Beach Boys Plaid Board Shirts. She does things like that. Goes shopping and buys me things. She "just happened" to be in the Pendleton store, and didn't know what to do with the extra hundred dollars and change that she "just happened" to have. According to her, it's from "the new Spring Line". What? There's nothing new about selling the same plaid shirts for 100 years. Are you kidding me?
