Universal has set July 1, 2011, for the release of "Battleship," confirming Peter Berg as helmer of the live-action pic based on Hasbro's naval combat board game.

Deal is part of a two-picture pic pact Berg has made with U, where he'll follow "Battleship" with an Afghan war drama "Lone Survivor."

Universal's date declaration positions "Battleship" to become the second film release from the studio's multiyear deal with Hasbro to turn its classic games into features. The studio previously set an April 11, 2011, release date for "Stretch Armstrong," with Steve Oedekerk about to deliver a script.

"Battleship" is the latest in Universal's strong push toward branded entertainment films, and Hasbro has fast become an increasingly important cog in that campaign.

A lot of interesting questions could be raised here. I suppose they'll use computer generated graphics for the ships. The images will be like super carrtoons, like Titanic. But where will they get the plot? There were really only two major battleship engagements in history, Jutland and Leyte Gulf. They could make a really good boring movie about Jutland. Full of sound and fury signifying almost nothing. Leyte Gulf, on the other hand, offers a lot of potential. I dunno, sounds like a questionable idea to me.
Edit: If they're not too fussy about having strictly battleships, somebody could make an interesting movie about Admiral Cunningham's great campaign ion the Mediterranean. I've always wanted to learn more about that.

IIRC, each side in the game had a carrier, battleship, destroyer, patrol boat and submarine.

Working off the scanty clues given above, my guess is that it'll be the plucky Allied carrier group (US CVN, US 'battleship' (some 21st century Cruiser design), German destroyer, Australian patrol boat and a British submarine taking on the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil Chinese CVN, Venezuelan-crewed ex-Soviet Cruiser, Iranian patrol boat, Myanmar-crewed destroyer and eeeeeeeeeeeevil Chinese submarine.

Forgetting USS Washington and South Dakota's beatdown of IJN Kirishima at Guadalcanal, are we? Granted, it was 2-on-1, and SD was more "beat-ee" than "beater", but those two BB's supported only by four destroyers versus a battlecruiser supported by IIRC six or seven heavy cruisers?

Or there's KGV and Rodney whacking Bismarck, for you ETO fans.

This actually wasn't bad, the hangman stuff was sort of a creepy side story. Bale got himself down to almost no weight and was scary looking as a result.
