As Halloween nears, many families will gather around the old television set for the annual viewing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” But, one dad says it’s time to retire the classic cartoon because of its taunting messages and unkind words.

“The show is riddled with the kids calling each other stupid, dumb, and blockheads. There is continous teasing and bullying. Charlie Brown is supposed to be the hero, instead he is kicked and demeaned at every turn, even by the adults giving out candy,” Buzz Bishop, otherwise known as DadCamp, wrote at Babble.com recently.:eusa_doh:

"Peanuts" was the darkest American comic strip ever published, dealing with relentlessly adult themes -- and its central character was a six year old boy in the grip of chronic depression. Parental guidance is suggested.

In all seriousness, Charlie Brown was never meant to be a "hero." The fact that he wanted to be a hero and never could *be* a hero is what gave the strip its poignancy. He was the perfect icon for a generation of kids who knew what it was like to be picked last, and managed to survive it.

What an odd thing to rail about.
I would imagine Buzz Bishop/DadCamp's children are sitting there watching Tosh.0 and South Park while dad is wringing his hands over the implications of Charlie Brown's failed field goals..

Every character in Charlie Brown had flaws and they all knew each other's flaws. They continued friendship despite their "bullying". Perhaps it is a good example of how to cope with life rather than obsessing about things that are said in a manner that is not perfect.

I'll take Chuck over the "every kid gets a trophy" mentality. Cripes.- “That's the secret to life... replace one worry with another....”

A little food for thought and a little off the Charlie Brown topic but we should ban the Roadrunner and Wylie Coyote cause they're to violent then turn the channel to Vampire Diaries,Family Guy, Southpark ,The Simpsons or some such thing...makes one wonder?

Where I grew up the one way you always showed another kid you liked them was to razz them in every way possible.
Yes, that is what kids did when I was young too. Seems like that Mr. Mom fella didn't have a normal childhood.

What's next? Deleting all references to "horrible" in the Hagar the Horrible comic strip?

Dick Tracy fails to examine the socio-economic factors which might cause a man with a perfectly flat cranium to turn to crime.

Calvin and Hobbes encourages demon worship in its presentation of a "talking" stuffed animal.

Gasoline Alley promotes a continuation of our irresponsible dependance on fossil fuels.

Zippy the Pinhead stereotypes all microcephalics as muu-muu-wearing, catchphrase-spouting slaves to popular culture.

The Amazing Spider Man fails to give appropriate acknowledgement to the growing social importance of female arachnid-Americans in today's world.

Instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, Mr. Mom should advocate selective alteration of "Peanuts". To wit:

Lucy needs to be shown getting her backside roundly and repeatedly kicked for being an eternal b**ch.

Franklin should be given a personality, rather than just be the groundbreaking '60s token black kid.

Peppermint Patty needs to be scolded by jamespowers for being a hippie tomboy. ;)
