I'll Lock Up

My mother recently gave me this tie chain, which belonged to my great-grandfather. The round part contains a baby photo of my mother, which dates the chain to Dec 1940 or early 1941. Due to age and wear, the photo doesn't really show up except close up. I don't know if a jeweler could clean it up.

I'm guessing the chain clips on to the shirt placket, as opposed to the modern ties chains I have where they slip over a button. The chain itself is shorter in length than modern ones, so it will have to be worn pretty high on the tie. Mom asked me to wear it at my graduation in December.
Were these a fairly common item back then?
