I really think they should release a line of hats based on the movie. I've shot them an email suggesting it.

I'm still not a fan of those surgically altered lips... just too puffy. I couldn't get over them when i saw her with the new ones in The Golden Compasse.

And she just became that much less attractive to me. Shame...

Saw it today. Spectacular looking movie in the big sweeping epic manner (with all the sentiment and license that implies).

I agree it looked great, but the cowboys were 100% cowboys as we imagine them today - no concessions to the period. Some of that is probably because the 30s/40s look on a man doesn't say "sexy" as obviously as it does on a woman.

Little off the topic, but cant help my self, Nicole's mum and dad live up the road from me and when she is in Aus I see her driving past my joint a bit, makes me feel a bit of Hollywood, a few years ago met Tom Cruise at the local park when he was playing with his son, dont get a chance normally to mix with the stars but it was pretty cool!

With an order for close to 450 hats for the feature film, Akubra custom made key pieces under the direction of headwear specialist Rosie Boylan. Working with Costume Designer Catherine Martin and a team of milliners, Boylan created striking silhouette headwear for the principal cast and 100’s of extra’s that profiled life in 1930’s Australia.

“From our perspective, working with Rosie was a great collaboration. She first came to us in 2005 with a very clear vision of what was needed. We enjoyed the creative process and it’s exciting to see it all coming to fruition now, knowing we’re a small but recognisable part of what will undoubtedly be Australian cinematic history,” said Managing Director Stephen Keir, the fifth generation of Keir to take the helm at the family owned and operated Akubra.
For her part the unassuming Boylan says, “With the men’s hats, my role was to create a range of strong character looks that carried the epic Hollywood styling of the film. I took the cinematic vision and worked with Akubra to translate their classic hats into customised pieces.”

Many of the Akubra hats supplied were hand shaped and aged by Rosie and her team who also created trims and wide ribbon banding that was typical of the era.

“We sent fresh, new open crowned hats off and they then had to make them look like they’d been worn through anything from war to years in the outback. Our hats are renowned for their durability so I’m sure ageing them was an art in itself,” added Stephen Keir.

This isn’t Akubra’s Hollywood debut with past movie credits including The Man from Snowy River, Crocodile Dundee and Bodyline.

Rosie Boylan, a specialist in creating headwear for Australian films, has been awarded a Churchill Fellowship. Rosie has more than 25 years working in theatre, film and television. Some of her notable screen creations have been the bonnets for The Piano, the headwear on Moulin Rouge and the headwear on Baz Lurhmann's Australia. Rosie will study headwear design from a historical and contemporary perspective in Japan, Italy, France, the UK and the US.

I gotta say - I never was much of a Kidman fan, found her a bit icy, but in this pic she has won me. There is a natural kind of elegance that comes to a woman in the summertime of life, and she is working it beautifully. You can see it in Lady Sarah as she transforms from a cold brittle aristocrat to a cattlewoman and a fighter.

Just me talking, but I sort of wish Jackman's Drover had been fleshed out a little more in the process of drawing close to Sarah. But you screw with the cowboy archetype at your own risk. In the language of the movies, the cowboy draws his strength from being 2-dimensional - he has to draw a hard sharp line between man and woman, or city and countryside. Jackman certainly is capable of more as an actor, but that's not what the movies want him for.

Anyway - back to hats. Notice how a lot of the cowpokes around Darwin wear fedoras, broad brimmed Squatter-types, even on horseback. Not archetypal, but typical of the period, I suppose. Those soft-crowned ten-gallons are too.

Just saw it, great movie. For an evil guy Fletcher wore a great dressy fedora at the end of the movie. This movie is definitely a contender for a Best Cinematography Oscar.

Attended the movie yesterday. I must agree with everyone, a great picture. The best movie I have seen this year. All the hats and costumes are great. The cinemetography is wonderful.:eusa_clap :eusa_clap Everyone should take in this flick. Great family movie with an actual storyline.

I am in two minds as to seeing this film. It has recieved middling critical reviews, generally a sign of excellence, but I have had little time for Ms Kidman since she turned her lips into a passable imitation of the Straits of Gibralter. On the other hand it seems almost unpatriotic not to go and see the thing.

Dear Godfrey

Thanks for your email regarding Akubra and the movie AUSTRALIA. Indeed there has been significant interest in the movie and especially the hats supplied by us. Interestingly we were not aware until the movie was released as to the final look of the hats supplied by us. We supplied the hats mostly in an open crown shape and Rosie Boylan, the set designer for the hats subsequently shaped them according to the costume designer’s requirements. This meant it was impossible for us to release a line of hats prior to the movie’s release.

However, since the movie has been released there have been requests for these styles of hats. Please appreciate that most of these hats were manufactured based on old recipes and blocks and whilst a must for those passionate about hats probably not viable for us as a batch manufacturer. Consequently at this stage we have chosen not to release a range of hats similar to those displayed in the movie. We feel it is likely to be a limited market, unlike the success we have had with hats like the Croc – worn by Paul Hogan in the Crocodile Dundee movies, or even our traditional range such as Cattleman and Snowy River which featured throughout the movie The Man From Snowy River.

I thank you for your input – and I have read the link you sent to me which I found fascinating. It is humbling to know there are so many people who respect the product we make. I work very closely with the 4th and 5th generation family owners of Akubra who are real hatters. There are some stories I could tell you!
