Attached is a picture of my version. It is rough, just off the flange. The brim curl needs to be cleaned up and the swoop magnified. Perhaps a bit of stiffener. I know it is coarser than you want. But if you are interested and want just a simple two ply knotted cord I will send the hat to you no charge if you pick up the shipping. There is a full 5" crown, 2 5/8" brim

Completely unrelated question. I have a Stetson western hat that I bought ~20 years ago, and the sweat band (evidentally not leather) is showing its age. Anyone know a shop in central NC that can replace a sweatband? It's not a hugely expensive hat so I'd rather not have to send it off somewhere.
Try B.M. Franklin and Co in Atlanta. They use real leather for replacements, their pricing is very reasonable, and from NC to ATL the shipping shouldn't be a deal breaker.

Very cool, Robert. That looks like a great first effort. I'll take it. I like the front bow in the original pictures. Can you duplicate that with a 1/2 or 3/4 charcoal or black ribbon?

when your favorite fedora gets a hole/split right at the point of the front pinch. Lock & co glued a patch behind it. So its no longer a hole but a slightly noticable patched hole. Is it time to toss it or does that give it character?

With it on, Id have to hand it to someone for them to see it. When Lock first fixed it, it was practically invisable, but with one year time the furfelt seems to be pulling away from itself at the scar a tiny bit. The hole is still completelypatched but now its kinda noticable. But Im thinking its cool. What do you guys think.?
Opinions?.

Also...Should I steam and brush or just leave it alone?

Thanks for your opinions.

I picked up a late 50s Stetson that has some cool characteristics... Green felt, gold ribbon, 7/8" hat band with bound brim. Anyway it came with two small tears on the crown and one spot that looks like it might be on the way... But it's the first time I've ever come across that color and the defects actually aren't visible when the crown is creased so I kept it and wear it.

I say wear it in good health and don't worry about it. And get a replacement when you run this one into the ground.

I have a Penman Indy that is high quality that I can vouch for. I once had an Adventure Bilt Indy that was great but those are now made by Penman. Sorry, no experience with Herbert Johnson.

Didn't both make hats for the Indy franchise at one point? Herbert Johnson, I know had or still has the license for official merch and Penman's mentor was Steve Delk of AdventureBuilt. Likely can't go wrong with either.

I believe you are correct. It is my understanding that Steve Delk created the tools and materials to recreate the iconic Raiders hat and he formed the Adventurebilt Hat Company to sell this and other Indy style hats to the public. Steve was also chosen from many hat makers to make Indy’s hats in the Crystal Skull movie. The Penman hat company carries on Steve’s legacy.

I believe that Herbert Johnson made the original Raiders hat that is seen in the movie.

Hey Jeff - yes, Herbert Johnson made the Indy hats for the first three movies, I think.

Steve Delk made the hats for the fourth one, and officially passed the baton to John Penman, along with the blocks that he used, and some trade secrets as well, depending on how much of the marketing copy you believe. :)

I'm not normally much of a costume hat guy, and I intend to get a hat from John Penman at some point regardless, but if you are going to have one costume hat then in my opinion, this is the hat.

There is something about the brim that I need dig back up. I think one or the other cuts the brim more narrowly on the sides than front to back, which is supposed to be more difficult and more accurate, but I need to find that bit again.

John Penman also says something about having two distinct blocks; one for rabbit and one for beaver. I'm not sure why this would be necessary, but I find it interesting.

I'm also jumping back and forth from the Indy 1-2-3 hats and Indy 4 hats; my apologies.

I just got my first Penman hat delivered today, coincidentally. One of the ready-mades that should be waiting for me when I return to the office late this week.

I believe both HJ and Penman offer the dimensional brim. My confusion was apparently because HJ also offers the model of hat the Indy hats were based on with a non-dimensional brim.
