AI Overview

Based on recent, late-2025 customer feedback, Christys' Hats appears to be experiencing severe financial or operational distress, with reports indicating
they may have gone into liquidation.
Here are the key details regarding the status of Christys' Hats:
  • Reports of Liquidation: As of December 2025, reviews on Trustpilot suggest the company has gone into liquidation, with customers reporting that they are not being notified of this on the website and are being advised they are unlikely to get refunds for returned items.
  • Customer Service Issues: Recent reviews from late 2025 (e.g., Dec 8, 2025, and Dec 23, 2025) report long delays, lack of responses to emails, and problems receiving refunds.
  • Website Activity: Despite these reports, the website (christys-hats.com) appeared to still be active and taking orders, creating a disconnect with the reported insolvency.
Historical Context
Founded in 1773, Christys' has a long history as a top-tier British hat maker. In 2011, the brand was acquired by Liberty. While it was still celebrating its 250th anniversary in 2023 with manufacturing in Witney, Oxfordshire, the current reports indicate a sudden and severe decline.
Just adding a bit to the Christys mystery. Google maps says the Christopher place store is only “temporarily closed “ but I walked past it today and it’s completely gone. Another business has taken its place. If they do come back, I’m wondering if it’ll be in some kind of online only capacity.

Wow! With all the stuff that’s happened with my order, and what I have seen online, I was having difficulty believing the “temporarily closed” bit, but that’s still a surprise.

Thanks for posting.

It seems a really strange way for them to go out. I visited that store early on though when I first moved to London and left without buying anything cause the vibe was really off.
I still haven’t bought any traditional English hats yet. Would like to get a Herbert Johnson seaplane one of these days potentially

If there’s a better thread to ask this in I’ll happily delete and ask elsewhere. Question is (as I can’t find a whole lot of posts about them here in search) any of you who have current era Herbert Johnson hats (either rabbit or beaver), how do you find they hold up? Decent value for money or comparable to the recent eras of Stetson, Christys etc?

I've had one (rabbit) for two years and it's held up just fine. Definitely a well-made hat, but their prices seem to have gone up by an additional $300 since I bought mine.

Hi guys,

Quick question on pouncing beaver felts. I have been hand sanding all in one direction with the nap and have seen people actually sand back and forth as if they aren’t following the nap direction. They seem to be getting too smooth felts and am wondering if I should be pouncing like I have been in one direction or if I should switch up my process.

What grit are you using?

600 -> 1000 -> 1200
If you sand against the nap with a paper coarser than 600 grit you risk ripping the felt rather than pouncing it. I use a circular motion so on half the circles I am against the grain. while using 800-1000-1200.

But I don't use a block on the crown, just cup the paper in my hand and use a light touch. My hand just guides the paper, no pressure applied, just let the sandpaper do its job. On the brim I will use a small sanding block as the surfact is flat unlike the curved crown.

Thanks! Have been looking at the seaplane, not just for the Indiana Jones heritage but the vintage look in general but I’m really unsure of the price/quality value of the current ones. I need to just make a visit to the shop one of these days and have a real look

Ahh, yes I see the price has gone up a bit.

Well, on the "Pro" side, they're using FEPSA felts made to their specs, so I don't think there's too much to worry about long term. I also really think they have *the* block. There are some folks who want a "Streets of Cairo" hat and they have some nitpicks, but it looks like the block to me. They're also semi customizable, in that you can get your initials imprinted and choose a lining.

On the "Con" side, the sweat band is not as nice as I would like. I think it's bonded leather? It hasn't shrunk up on me ala Akubra, it's just at that price it's a little like putting bargain tires on your Rolls Royce. I'm not sure if they are currently shipping with boxes, but mine sure did not come with one, which is another "at that price..." thing.

You're definitely paying a premium for the brand name and heritage, but the build quality on mine is pretty good. I'm sure they only could have improved in the six years since. They're not just skating by on the association, you will get a very nice hat for your money.

If it’s bonded leather sweatband then I’d definitely pass on it, even if the price was quite a bit lower.

Is that actually the case of are you speculating?

Hello all!

Brand new here, I recently found an old Dobbs hat at an antique/vintage store and was hoping for help identifying what type it is. It's definitely seen some wear, but I'm having a hard time finding online resources on my own. I also wanted to make sure I was in the right place before I attached pictures of it - but if you're willing to help, please just let me know and I'm happy to attach some photos! Some precursory info is that it's felt, has some three vent holes near the crown on each side, an external leather band with rivets (I'm not sure if this is the right term) that hold it in place, and an interior leather sweatband with no liner. The sweatband is pretty damaged and trying to flip it out to look for identifying marks caused a piece to flake away, so I'm hesitant to press that avenue any further.

Thanks in advance!

If the sweat band is crumbling then it will need to be replaced now. If you have a hat maker/shop in your area you can get it replaced for $50 - $75. Do you like the hat enough to invest $75 more? If you have to mail the hat for repair you are faced with another $50 for postage there and back.

I dunno man, whatever this is. It's not roan leather. Genuine leather maybe.

That looks like a chrome tanned calfskin to me ( I do a lot of leatherwork). "Bonded leather, or "Pleather" is basically leather dust bonded with a glue binder. With age and use they often shrink, get hard and can become brittle. My thought is.. if you like the hat... wear it regardless of the sweatband material. If it becomes an issue later, just replace it with a nicer and properly fit sweatband

Does anybody know about the O'Rourke hat company of San Francisco? "Makers of famous Castle Hats" is the quote on the label. Cant find any info on them.

The earliest reference that I have found was from 1905.

Founded by J.J. O’Rourke and J. Cal Eubanks as a jobber / wholesaler / retailer, they were located at Seventh and El Dorado, San Francisco. In late 1907 they moved to 785-787 Mission Street (three stories and a basement).

Then in 1912 they moved to a five-story building at 7-9 Battery Street they named the Castle Hat Building.

In 1919 they began to manufacture their own hats. The factory was located at 34-38 Fremont.

Mr. Eubanks died in December of 1919 at age 56. His 15-year tenure puts the company start date around 1904/1905.

The latest reference found was in 1953. This ad was from 1945.
