Has anyone ever tried changing the color of a straw hat, like from natural to black?

Could that be done with a can of spray paint if it's paint that would stick to straw? Just curious.

Another reason I'd be interested in my black Stetson has a bit of a shiny sheen to it and I think it would look better if it were flat black

Spray paint and then acrylic. I have changed a hat from gray to black using this method and it does work, if you are careful. -

Others can chime in - probably about dyes - but I'm not sure canned spray paint is the right way to go.

Has anyone ever come across a hat with this label? I have seen it in two separate hats (with different, seemingly fabricated, manufacturers), both claiming to be Italian. One brand, that I will not name here, even has an origin story that includes a 5th generation, Italian hat making family, seemingly fictional. Being charitable, I originally suspected the felts of being Czech in origin, but I am now thinking Chinese. The beaver hats sell for around $325, with rabbit costing less. Anyone ever come across these tags? Thoughts on hats like this?

Spray paint and then acrylic. I have changed a hat from gray to black using this method and it does work, if you are careful. -

You can paint a straw hat with any acrylic paint, spray paint etc. but the key is several light coats. to achieve a smooth finish

Liquitex acrylic spray paint
Liquitex Matte Varnish
small paint brush

1. First of all ensure the hat is clean free from dust and remove unwanted trims

2. spray the straw hat with several light coats and let It dry in between

3. using a paint brush apply the acrylic matte varnish to protect the color of the hat, this is optional but if you don't wanna respray many times then its good not to skip this step

4. using a small paint brush, paint the imperfections

It’s got a really nice shape to it. I like that rakish crown. I suspect fairly modern though (which can be a rather broad term around here).

In three languages the label states "100% hair" however, nowhere does it state "Made in Europe".

Something about Italia, sure... but not Europe.

I don't think it's more than a decade old. That logo with the stars in the shield across the top is pretty recent, and Stetson reintroduced the Medalist branding since the 150th Anniversary, I'm pretty sure.

I would have thought it was older because it has such a vintage look to it.
I also noticed it says Open Road, is that because of the style?

Also is it possible to steam the brim up? I usually don't snap my brims down.

It does look like it has a bit of a patina, but that could just be the straw that was used. However, the sweatband markings also indicate it's youth. Those modern markings rub off more readily than older ones; they're just stamped on, rather than debossed.

Open Road is the model name, and indicates the blocking, etc. A little steam can help reshape the brim, yes.
