Hey guys, a quick question..

http://www.hatshopping.com/Penn-Bogart-Hat-by-Stetson.html#

I'm thinking off buying this hat, my first fedora, but i can't decide on the colour.

I wear a lot of black, but i will buy a other suit pretty soon (navy blue pinstripe suit)
What would be the best colour that will go with everything??

Thanks in advance
Very old post, but let me say two things the Dark Blue Penn Bogart is very nice

MOLD MEASLES

I recently dove head first into starting a collection of jackets. As often stated (or warned) here- it’s an addicting endeavor. I’ve been soaking up your impressive knowledge and suggestions from the sidelines but came across an issue that doesn’t appear to have much meat on the bone here. Probs for good reason due to vigilance and avoidance from you experienced connoisseurs.

I pulled the trigger on an east west musical that I should have scrutinized more. Will post pics when I figure out how. Jacket seems to be in great condition for the price and sized perfectly for me. (Marked 46 but just under 18” shoulder/ 21” pit). I accepted seller offer of $500 that was also mentioned here in F&D by another member. Anyway jacket is great fit but showed some freckling that is confined to 3 of the 4 back panels. Thought it was aged finish, watermarks, or something benign. I’m pretty certain it’s mold measles.

Gave a couple wipe downs with zero results. Same nothing burger with 50/50 white vin/ water. Was worried about contaminating other gear so have had it in garage or outside while I’m figuring out whether to trash it or thrash it. I’m willing to write it off as expensive (but valuable) lesson so think I’m gonna nuke this thing and report back to archive experience.

Sprayed with straight up white vin this morning outside in early sun where jacket remains. Barely wiped down because the 3 “pocked” panels soaked in way more of it than beaded up or ran off. Leather immediately relaxed from the moisture (and/or acid) and obviously burnished the hell out of it. Actually doesn’t look as bad as I’d expect.

Thinking of dunking jacket to completely eradicate any existing spores that could be embedded even if it is a death blow. Guessing that could wreck stitching (which seems entirely solid right now). Hate to destroy a sweet relic, but I’m unwilling to deal with any mold issues whatsoever and I’m totally game on guinea pig duty in current situation. Will post pics when I can with insights, repercussions, and results. I’m open to suggestions or requests.

You may fare better posting this in the leather jacket section. You're in hats.

Be that as it may... if you like the jacket (a lot) and are certain that's an organism, were it mine I'd take it to a professional leather jacket cleaning facility. I restrict hillbilly wash tub cleaning to jackets I won't miss if something goes awry.

I am absolutely in love with this dobbs twenty in gray. The box says its from 1938 but I dont know. What do you think?

Out of my hats I seem to find that the dobbs twentys fit me the best. I usually wear 7 3/8 but this one is 7 1/4 and must run big?

Hard to say from the pics. If there is a tag behind the sweatband it could provide additional clues. However, be careful when manipulating the sweat as you could pop stitching or damage the leather if stiff.

Also, a little research into the retailer can help. A quick check shows that F.F. Limehouse was once the mayor of Orangeburg, SC. I didn't find anything on the store, though.

Borsalino sizing question..... Ive eyed a couple of nice looking Borsalinos recently, but am a bit concerned about the sizing. Ive seen hats that were marked 7-1/4-59 and another 7-3/8-59. Euro vs us sizing has always confused me a bit. for example an Akubra 7-3/8/59 fits me the same as a Stetson 7-1/4/58.. Within the Borsalino world, is a 59 cm a 59cm? Its just a bit pricy to fly to the east coast or Italy to try on in person lol

There’s plenty of others around more experience than me but, I’ve owned two Borsalinos. I wear a 59 in Akubra, but both of my Borsalinos have been size 60 and fit me well.

Hello all - some help with sizing is much appreciated.
I recently purchased a Hemp Open Road in 7 3/8 (it was a little tight and I didn't love the floppy brim) so I then got a 10x (Shantung) Open Road in both 7 3/8 and 7 1/2 to try.

The 7 1/2 is very loose (the sweatband of the hat doesn't contact my head all the way around, so the crown is resting on my head, if I were upside down it would fall off) - this surely is too big.

Both 7 3/8s are snug, slightly too snug. (as in I will need to keep my hair short to wear them, there is no give - haven't worn them long enough to say if it would induce a headache but it's close). - this is surely too small.

My question is;
1. Over time will either hat stretch or shrink slightly? (I can't imagine the Shantung will change much but I don't know).

2 Should I have the 7 3/8 stretched? Or should I just put reducers in the 7.5

Appreciate any input!

Leather sweatbands will somewhat shrink down to conform to your head. As far as putting in reducers vs. stretching, I think the conventional wisdom imparted by most experts is always put in reducers if you have a choice. Stretching is only for hats you already own and don't have a choice in. There are even vids on YouTube showing where and how to put them in for the best fit. Hope this all helps

Strange. My Milano Straw Stratoliner is a 7⅜ and it runs a little big. I understood this to be common to all straw stratoliners, and possibly all modern Stetson straws. The Strat is the only one I’ve experienced personally.
