Gimme a Tab

... A Tab? I can’t give you a tab unless you order something.

Can I get a Pepsi Free?

....You want a Pepsi you gotta pay for it Pal.

Wow, I've not heard of Tab since the 70's lol.

Not sure the Indy thing is a thing downunder, If it is or was I missed it lol. To be honest I didn't even hear of Indy until recently after joining this forum. But then I'm a boring old fart, good fun movies though. I like all Harrison's movies, but then who doesn't.

Why not? Looks good to me.
I’ve been thinking about making a hatstand, too. Any ideas for design would be appreciated.

Darn it, no it wasn't and they eaten all over... I'll have to find another bit o wood, pitty as the wood itself was quite figured.

Well it's not going to be as large as I wanted but I have managed to save a bit and make a start, this is only a teaser of the base. I find it quite difficult as besides not being as young as I'd like I'm also disabled, hands are contracted closed and can't use my thumbs, try doing your shoe laces without thumbs let alone turning and using tools...all good fun!

But enough of the whinging, seems sometimes the rotted half eaten tree's hide the best secrets..... I'll answer the question myself, I think it's going to be worth following through.. Look at how purdy this timber is.

I’m looking at putting my hats into a database while I still remember most of the details about them. Does anyone else do this? And if so, can you recommend an app? I’ve downloaded Airtable, which looks promising.

Very nice. That’s looking far more impressive than anything I’ll be making.

My wife bought a second hand hat over the internet. It arrived, not in a box, but in a bag, and as you would expect, squashed. But she loves the colour and shape, so we decided to keep it and I’m going to try steaming it back into shape.
How should I go about this? Steam & shape with my hands? Steam & get her to wear it? Any advice would be appreciated.

Lots of different tricks for that but most of us started in the kitchen. Find yourself a bowl or pot or flower pot, similar in shape to the hats crown and a bit smaller. Glass or steel, avoid plastic for the obvious reasons. Use what you find with your steam to work out the shape. If you iron it, be sure to place a cloth between felt and iron.

Gary, Find the YouTube video "Kevin steaming a hat". This will help give you some idea. As you'll see, the best way is to steam, stiffen, mold, try on, re-do.

Hope this helps. It helped me the first time I steamed an out of joint hat.

image.jpg Alright folks, have a question and need some help identifying this one so figured this would be a good place to post this. Bought this at an estate sale for $10 and, while I can assume it’s an Australian military slouch hat, I’m not positive it’s made by Akubra nor can I figure out how to date these things to figure out it’s age. Any advice? image.jpg

No it's not made by Akubra, their model is fur felt. It's a Statesman Military model imported by MountCastle Hats. They are an old Australian hat company that also imports and exports hats. I believe those are made in Sri Lanka from Aussie wool.

No idea how to date it I'm sorry, they are still sold today I think. They supply a great many government hats and also for schools.

Wow thanks a lot! This gives me a good jumping off point for more research! Any idea of value?

New or pre-loved? For a wool Aussie slouch hat New I think RRP is about $150 but you see them often on sale for around a $100-$130 AUD, 2nd hand you can pretty much always find both fur felt and wool so re-sale isn't high and you can buy them used from army surplus stores all over.

I was just looking at a fantastic RAAF blue one at a store for $50 to give you an idea. The one above looks as if it wasn't a service person's actual hat as they are extremely strict on how they are shaped, though who knows.

If I had to guess I would say it’s NOS because it doesn’t have any name in it But the leather strap is missing from it and it looks a little older on the outside.

Well I just need something to go between the top and the base now, damn shame how much was eaten/ruined. Lovely timber, am doing it all the old fashioned way. Bee's wax with Tripoli powder for the cut 'n polish and just a natural shellac to seal 'n protect. Will then just polish with bee's wax 'n orange oil, nice smell to deodorize my lid and to kill any nasties
