I would take it as his appreciation of your handiwork or homage to his friend.... or it could be in never occurred to him he could change it :);)

for me.. do know I have some hats I am reluctant to change. Usually it is I fear not being able to return it just so. Whether it was a shape I just happened to hit on by luck... or a simple clean factory shape I feel suits that particular hat.

Thanks for the reality check, Blare. I think both of your comments apply to a degree. If asked, my friend would claim the "homage" as his reason, and fire-off a steely smile in my direction. But it probably never occurred to him to change it.

And that's perfectly OK with me.

Michael, hope all is well up there. Damage is being reported on the news. Check in when you can & be safe.
Thanks for your concern Jack. A couple of small tornadoes that bounced down and damaged a couple of buildings. Fortunately no injuries and also fortunately they didn't drop down until they were about 5 miles northeast of town. But it is spring in the midwest, so I expect more storms will present themselves.

Thanks,
Michael

News video showed the roof coming off the one bldg with the funnel on the ground. Glad it missed town!

I like the look of this hat and might have one made. Can anyone guess the brim width? I'm thinking 3.5" IMG_0031.jpeg IMG_0030.jpeg IMG_0028.jpeg

So standard sizes look different on different size frames. Funny, I never considered that until my quest began for an Open Road. A western cowboy hat is too much material for my noggin, but I like the western vibe. Maybe the Corrections hat above might be a better suited.

Yes, the crown circumference is greater in a 7 1/2" hat than a size 7" so the brim proportion would look different. So that makes it harder to discern the brim width from a picture.

If you are fortunate to have a hat shop close by then you cannot beat trying on different dimensioned hats. Nothing is better than the real thing to tell you what looks good/what suits your stature.

Unfortunately I have no local hatter. I've had plenty of custom hats made for me (Penman, Steve Delk, Jaxonbilt), but still have yet to get that "ah ha" feeling of finding a hat with dimensions that suit me perfectly.

On fedoras the crowns are too tall and the brim is too narrow (Raiders and Crusade), and cowboy hats are just too much material especially in the brim.

The quest continues....

I was just wondering if you'd tried an Akubra Campdraft. It's an OR and it won't break the bank, plus it'll let you see if you like the look. Great hats as well.

Have you opened a conversation with a custom hatter? I would send them pics of hats you own that you don 't like the proportion/dimensions. I think an experienced custom hatter adept in making multiple styles of hats could help you hone in on the proportions that would work for you. By showing him pics, explaining what you don't like about the hat the hatter could make recommendations on the adjustments needed. I have great confidence in Mike at Northwest Hats. He can make you what ever style you desire and has 15+ years of experience. Plus his pricing won't break the bank.

To compound matters about estimating this one, the hat is larger than his head. Look at the first picture that is an upward shot with brim and sweatband line visible. That sure looks to me to be a good gap from the dark line of sweat to the wearer's temple. Likely a wardrobe person's use of what they had on hand stuffed with foam, etc.

Good catch!

I received my walnut Stratoliner today. Shipping was slow with a week over the scheduled delivery date. I was surprised by it having a thin black ribbon. Every picture I have seen has a brown ribbon that matches the edge binding. The edge binding is brown. Has anyone else experienced this? Do any of you have pictures of a modern Stratoliner with a different color ribbon compared to the edge binding?

My 150th anniversary Stetsonians came with a brim binding that matched the felt colour yet both hats, (Mink & Cariboo) had cheap generic black ribbon/bow work. It was horrid so sent it out to a hatter to be upgraded.
