I would be hesitant to use hairspray on felts as well. Reason is that I think the glue or stiffening agent of the spray (consisiting of polymers I believe) would stick to the surface of the felt, whereas shellac, when solved in methanol, would penetrate the felt and leave the surface smooth.

All i know is how it worked for me.
This Vita-Felt Strat was floppy as heck. I gave the brim a couple light coats of Aqua Net. It’s still good over a year later.
The Borsa velour was a test for color change, stiffening and if it gummed up the felt. 3 coats of Aqua Net only on one half of the brim and the only way i can tell which side got sprayed is the bow side is firmer.
So...ymmv.

I have used it, earlier in my hat addiction. I watched all of Kevin's videos back then.
I learned some good things and still restore a flange the way he does, unless I'm reblocking.
But hair spray is a stiff coating applied to the outside. As I discovered that traditional methods were generally applied, and worked into, the inside of a hat, I became suspicious of the hair spray thing. It's a film than can collect dirt ... is how I started looking at it.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I've shied away from it as my hats became more expensive. It's interesting, but Hurricane Jack said he wouldn't practice another technique I learned from Kevin at JJ Hat, using tape to lift dust and dirt out of the felt. His logic was the same as mine re: hair spray. Why risk sticky residue on your felt?

If it works it works is all I can say, Bowen. And the way you describe it it seems to have a lasting quality as well, which would be another argument for shellac. Shellac is thermoplastic of course, which is why hats seem to go back to their original shape once the get a steam bath. In part I base my judgement on the way over time hairspray seems to stick to everything in my bathroom, where my wife uses it on a daily basis. So in part it has to do with how often and how much you'd have to use it on a hat.

I just figured if little old ladies used it to hold their blue hair then could brush it out..how bad could it be??
So i gave it a shot.
I tried dedicated spray stiffener, spray starch and i’ll stick with Aqua Net.
Just my experience not an endorsement.

Academic, like you said, but Kevin at JJ Hat actually says not to use Aqua-net.

I was using Tresseme, or something like that.
If I had any Auqua-net I'd a save it for when beehive hairdoos return. My mom used it. The smell reminded me of skunk.
But you guys eat polecat down in the hollers, don't you?

I've tried them all, B. I hear ya.
I just used gum tragacanth for the first time. That's my new go to, but you do have to flip the hat and work it in.

I have my eye on a 'Beaver Hats' Fedora on ebay, but when researching the hat all I ever see is 'Beaver Brand Hats' with a different logo. Are these companies the same and they just changed their logo at some point, or are they 2 different companies ? I just want to make sure I'm not looking at some knock-off brand.

Seems to be a '60s / '70s branding for this company. You see it in "Major" and "10 X" hats quite often. Not sure what advantage that would give a counterfeiter.

Everything I've seen in the "Beaver Hats" version is identical to features in "Beaver Brand Hats" (markings on sweats, wording used, size tag styles, etc.). Here is a pic from when Beaver Brands company was auctioned off that shows both logos on some hat boxes.

Same deal. The Beaver brand has an interesting history. The company existed for quite some time, but went out of business in 2012. It also encompassed several other historical brands. A lot of hats of theirs you see on line are from the liquidation sale the factory had at the time.

In my limited experience, Beaver brand hats can run the gamut. I've held some that felt like Brillo pads, and seen more than a few that looked top quality.

I have a beaver brand western from most likely the 70’s and for what I payed it’s a great hat. Bought it to mess around with brim curling etc. It’s certainly got some crown.

Thanks, it's on ebay with a Best Offer, so I guess I'll see if I can get it cheap. I just liked the color and styling and looks to be in great shape.
