Oh yeah and then there's this....the view from the dental mirror...looks like a reorder number? I chickened out on peeling the sweat back any further but I could see the edges of the red/orange tag with what looked like maybe some ink writing on it...I think the rest will have to remain a mystery.

Having said that, the agent that listed the hat was kind enough to inquire about the hat's history for me. She found that it belonged to "August Ekdiahl Johnson, a man of Swedish decent who settled in Decker, TX sometime before 1891. He worked in farming or the new Swedish settlement in Texas and the name was placed in the hat for identification in case of injury or death. He was the sole owner of the hat."

It's pretty fascinating to think of the history of things like this that have found their way to rest in our possession. I hope that this hat will stay with me for a long time to come.

I noticed that often these old Boss Raw Edge hats also have "The Fray" on the sweat but this one does not. As I understand from reading some of the older posts that "The Fray" had to do with a process used when making the sweat band and named after the Stetson officer who came up with the idea? Is that all or do any of you know more of that story? I think the previous info/pictures posted may have been lost to copyright law...

I need suggestions for a good block to purchase. I'm not getting into the business or anything, just need a good, sturdy block I can use to clean up hats, help straighten old creases, and general upkeep. Do I need a block in my size or a size smaller?

Are you looking to reshape your hats or to make hats? Are you going to remove the sweatbands?

I hear good things about Hatters Supply House so I’d give them a look. You should be able to order your actual size if you are reblocking without removing the sweatband. Of course, you won’t get quite as good results as the block will be slightly loose, but most of us are pleased with how it comes out. The good part about buying new from a hat supply store is you can ask the employees these questions and get expert advice. You also get the option of getting a matching flange and band block.

I can only guess that it was some aftermarket add-on.

Now THAT is one tricked out lid!:eek:o_O As I looked at the pictures the sounds of a Russian men's choir wafted in the soft summer breeze..........and thoughts of the winter scenes in Doctor Zhivago passed by...........:rolleyes:;)

Not sure if this is the correct thread to post this question but: Will you folks date this hat for me? It is in excellent condition so I think it is not very old? Purple lining. Royal Stetson. Stratoliner. 2 1/2" brim. As shown the crown is about 4" high. It is a small size and I do not know the code on the size tag; perhaps a 6 3/4? Is the correct color name Gray? Thank you for the help.
