What's the difference between a "touring" and "vintage" Irish flat cap? Do touring caps have longer visors?

Yes, that is my understanding. If you're talking Hanna Hats, the "Vintage" has a 2" bill and the "Touring" is a little longer and more tailored and rounded. It's a slightly different look.

Does anyone have a photo of a newer Stetson Whippet in either Navy or Cognac? I need to buy a gift for a friend and cannot get a good idea of those two Stetson colors. I know on my experience what Tawny and Caribou looks like (and black is, well, black).

I have a modern Navy Whippet, and it is notoriously difficult to photograph! It hews closely to true navy blue-- a good blue-- that while dark, will not be mistaken for black.

Except, perhaps, in pictures.

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I shall frame the following in the form of a question:

Have you ever seen this advertising from Farmall, either in vintage archives or-- as here-- in current reproduction?

... I was expecting a curveball at work, but instead was beaned, leading to seasonal work up until Christmas (and "new opportunities for growth," as yet unidentified and secured, beyond).:rolleyes: ;)

Whilst warehouse picking, I have run into the above gentleman farmer, fedora'd astride his tractor-- and of course thought of all of you.

A happy thing.

:)

Similarly, what the heck is the difference between Caribou and Light Grey in Whippet? As far as I can tell, the latter has a contrasting black ribbon, but the shades of grey seem similar to me. Reason I ask is I have a Caribou Strat but do like that contrasting ribbon on the Whippet....seems very retro-forties-style to me.

Caribou (at least the two I own) is much more blue/gray than gray. Light gray is decidedly different.

Thank you for your response. So if I have Caribou in my repitoire, Light Grey will not be an overlap? I would prefer to have another color that gives more flexibility than doubling up, if you know what I mean.

Very helpful. Light Grey almost looks like Silver Belly with a black ribbon. A nice hat
Thanks. And in person, no. Not even close to Silverbelly. It really is a very light gray.

To me, Caribou has a violet hue to it. Sometimes I think I'm crazy, because I've seen this same gray vs. Caribou discussion before. And I just don't think it's remotely close; not even in the ballpark.

But then I've never seen a purple caribou either. So maybe I am crazy.

I have a modern Stetsonian in Caribou and it is mid to dark grey so in my view a light grey would be an entirely different colour and I would gladly have both in my closet.

Light grey is much harder to find. I’ve been looking for one for over a year. Just to add in some more confusion, Stetson also makes a Phantom Grey that needs some consideration.

Given the scarcity, maybe they should all be termed "Phantom" Gray. In Stetsonians, I've only seen two - mine and one Bob Roberts picked up at the St. Joseph outlet last year. I don't know why they're so scarce, it's a great color.

In the U.S., Stetson seems to be the leader in volume, sales, brand image, and collectability, generally speaking, followed by many lesser known/marketed brands (Dobbs, Knox, Cavanagh, Penny's, Disney and others). How about Australia? There are all sorts of Akubra discussions here on the Lounge but what are/were some of the other high quality but lesser know Australian brands?

I got home tonight with some daylight, so was able to take a decent shot. L-R: Modern Caribou Strat, vintage Strat in a darker Gray, Dobbs Hanover Square in Gray (a couple shades lighter than battleship), and the Light Gray modern Stetsonian. The hat to the back left is a vintage Stetsonian in a light blue/grey.
