I live in Houston and discovered unless your looking for an off the shelf cowboy hat your out of luck. The Hat Store has cowboy hats and a couple of straw fedoras, all at high retail.

If your staying in the Galleria area you have to get BBQ at Luling City Market. It's 5 minutes away.

All the Dobbs Game Birds and Rainbows I've found on eBay and the Lounge are kind of narrow-brimmed. Are they all like that?

No. This is a 40s Game Bird with a 2 3/4” brim.

Max, I suggest you look online for antique stores/malls and vintage clothing shops near where you are in Houston. Any new hat stores are going to carry exactly what you expect. If you're looking for a quality western, perhaps. But if you're looking for vintage fedoras, it'll take some scouring. Hell, see if there's anything on Craigslist Houston you could hunt down. Check estate sales in the area. Finding vintage hats the old fashioned way takes time and shoe leather.

I think Dobbs applied the name Game Bird to numerous hats of different shapes, sizes, and materials, over the years. I have a brown one from around 1939 that has a self-ribbon and a 2 1/4 brim. I've seen Birds with taller crowns, grosgrain ribbons and wider brims, as illustrated, for example by Bill's, above.

If you mean by plane, that's a tough one. Even hat boxes can be squished, and with the price of checked baggage these days, when I travel by plane I pick one hat and go with it on my head.

Driving is a whole different story. For an extended trip I usually take 2 or 3 that sit on top of stuff in the back seat.

Outside of wearing it all the way or taking a sturdy plastic hat box as a carry-on, I don't have much faith I could make a trip with one in the overhead or under the seat in front of me. Not really a fan of either of those options. I have not found a travel hat that I like but I'll keep researching. Thanks for the reply.

There is a Youtube video of Jeff? at Del Monico demonstrating how to crease an open crown Strat. Initially he just does a dry crease that looks really great without anything else. Have you found this to be true of the Strat? If I ordered an open crown Strat, is the top of the crown so soft that dry creasing as shown in the video is really that easy? Looks too easy, which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance. (Yep, I'm a newb, so bear with me and all the various questions!)

When I fly, I usually just pick a hat for the trip and wear it. I'll just hold it on my lap for the flight.

Or perhaps the flight attendant will keep watch over it for you...

I think it will depend on the particular hat. I own two modern open crown Royal Deluxe Stetsons (the Premiers are RD) and an Excellent Strat. While they all will take a dry crease (especially the Ex Strat), a little steam to set them helps things out.
