I think burgundy can go with all kinds of browns, greys (including granite) and blues, blacks, etc.

When you decide on a custom, your hatter can send you actual pieces of felt and ribbon to see what the combinations look like in person. Colors can be a little misleading on a computer screen.

can a camel hat carry a burgundy ribbon?

Here are a couple of mine. You could swap the ribbons between hats and they would still look great.

Here is a tan/beige Stetson #1 with a burgundy ribbon.

The is a custom from Art Fawcett. The color is Sahara with a copper ribbon.

No but any brownish/redish color should be fine.

If you are having a custom hat made the maker should be more then willing to snap a picture of the ribbon against the felt.

Your chosen hatter should send you photos of different ribbon options against your felt of choice. You should be able to get an idea based on that; however, experience has shown that hats can be tough to photograph and get the true colors to show up.

Best I can do for camel with burgundy. The ribbon is quite dark but appears lighter in the sun. The ribbon is vintage cotton and rayon finished edge grosgrain. If you don’t want petersham ribbon make sure Hufvud knows that as that is mostly what he uses.

I tried to show it in shadow as well as full sun. This is not a usual combination and I’m looking forward to seeing the finished hat(s).

Mike at Northwest made this beautiful "early thirties" fedora to my specs a couple of years ago. He was a pleasure to deal with, and the quality of this 100% beaver hat for only about $75 more than an off-the-shelf Stetson is simply awesome. I seem to recall it was about three or four months from first contact to delivery. I'm no expert on custom hats - Northwest is that only custom hater I have dealt with - but I'd order another from him in a second.

I like a classic black ribbon with granite felt.

For camel felt, an old copper ribbon looks fantastic to my eye.

Are you referring to my camel with the brown ribbon and binding (with the burgundy ribbon draped over it)? It’s a D’Aquino and very very much an entry level custom hat. All of the hatters you are using will make you better hats than this. Your Gannon and Northwest will be in a whole different league.

Nice hat. The more modest brimmed westerns are very versatile. Technically, all Open Road and clones have bound brims, but that doesn’t take anything away from your raw edge hat. How about a headshot?

Nice hat, but not an OR. Yours has a two ply cord where an OR would have grosgrain ribbon and a ribbon bound edge.

Newbee here: For shaping the crown and brim and keeping the felt hats clean, do I need any special gear or will a good brush and a tea kettle for steam work just about as well?
