Abraham Blum received the patent for his sweatband sizer on February 26, 1935. He must've sold or licensed the patent to Hat Corporation of America , because I don't remember seeing it on a non-HCA hat. There's a Knox on the Lounge where it's called a SIZOR, while the Dobbs, Cavanagh, and Crofut & Knapp hats all label it TRUSIZE. The examples I remember seeing are all from the late 1930s into the early 1940s, so I don't think it was used much beyond that. It was used on stiff and soft straw hats, as well as stiff and soft felt hats, and was touted as giving the wearer about a three-size adjustment range.

There were a lot of gimmicky things tried during this period, and most of them turned out to be less than useful. I'd hesitate to use the TRUSIZE because the metal clip is fragile by this point in its history.

Crofut & Knapp more typically used their own version of the Bon-Ton (and later Bon-Ton Ivy) sweatband on their C&K and Dobbs brands starting in the early-1920s after the original patent expired. After 1929, Cavanagh Derbies and Boaters also used this more-practical band, and then Knox after the 1932 acquisition. This Bon-Ton style band could be found on HCA Boaters into the 1960s.

There can be a difference between a Panama and a straw fedora: a Panama is a type of fedora, but there are many other choices available. For a number of reasons, I'm not a big fan of the standard white fedora, the main one being that it's hard to get a nice one at a reasonable (for me) price. Of the brands you mention, Optimo and Brent Black are really going to cost you, and PHD have always seemed a bit shaky to me (check out the Panama Hats thread). You might want to take a look at Art Fawcett's Milan straws: I have two in the fedora style and love them to death. One of the problems with white Panamas is that they easily pick up dirt and smudges, but the real Milans (and Art's one of the only makers who has access to Milan straW) only get better as time goes on, developing a beautiful golden color. Peters Bros. also have their hemp line, which are really nice and can be ordered in pretty much any style you choose (I have two in the Stratoliner style) and in a variety of colors. Art's Milans will run you between $300 to $400, and the Peters Bros. just $100 to $150, depending on whether they're giving a discount to Loung members. Good luck.
Thanks. Taking your advice tropicalbob. I spoke with Art yesterday and will be going with one of his Milan fedoras. He was quite helpful. Thanks all for your input.

Need help identifying the manufacturer of this hat. The felt is incredible quality, very malleable, very similar to my 50s Mallorys. It appears to have been the house brand hat for Robinson's Men's Shop in San Bernadino, CA. I took a flier on this one and it is killer. Too bad it fits like a 7 3/8.

Any input/help identifying the manufacturer will be much appreciated.

Great looking hat. Are there any clues whatsoever under the sweat? Great bones!

Apologies if it's been asked before. I'm trying to identify the Fedora that Sudeikis wore in the movie "race" about jesse owens. I think it's a Stetson, but as to style I'm a little lost:

I'm quite taken with it and would like to get one for myself.

Anyone able to give me any info on it?

I'm fairly certain this is a current production Stetson Saxon based on the proportions, welted edge, ribbon, and even the residual feather.

Costumers draw from current production to match the era. If you are trying to match the hat to have one of your own. Any great looking brown fedora with a nice crown and a wider brim will fit the bill. I agree about the current Stetson offerings, but not sure about it being a Saxon. Stetsonian?

Not a Stetsonian. No bound brim and not nearly enough crown.

Sent directly from my mind to yours.

great white,

As others have mentioned, it COULD be something else, but given the crown and brim proportions, factory-look center dent, bow details, self-welted brim edge, color, and feather, I don't think you'll find a better match than the Stetson Saxon, and the good news it's still made and readily available several places on the internet. As a frequent hat wearer, I've enjoyed this site on several occasions for varying reasons, but I'm no expert, connoisseur or collector, but I did join the site just so I could respond to your inquiry, since based on owning this exact hat, I thought I might have something to offer.

For wooden crown blocks how much bump in circumference is given to no sweatband? In other words: if you want to do casual reblock without sweat removal on a 7 1/8 hat do you use a 7 1/8 block or a 7 block or is the sweat vs no sweat equal to a half size between the two?
