I wear a 7 Long Oval. (A bit of an unusual fit). I sold my Lincoln Benett long ago because the hard felt had been damaged. (It would be worth $335.00 today). If I could get another "hard" (helmet-type) Derby, I would be willing to pay for the premium hard-shaped felt. Where to look for a vintage hard Derby/Bowler to fit my L/O head may prove a daunting task.

Wish me well.

I'm interested in building my collection of vintage hats. I'm especially interested in vintage Borsalino Alessandria. I'm a size 60 or 7 1/2 and I have been struggling to find one in my size either in the Classifieds here on FL, Etsy or on ebay.

Any tips on where I should be looking?

You're looking in the right places. Add estate sales and antique stores to the list.

Several hatters use this technique... even those I didn't know about. Not sure if there's an additional, post singe, pouncing or not. Sounds reasonable, though.

@tommyK was thinning his amazingly gorgeous herd recently ... I believe he is your size ... you may want to check in with him

that is a tough size for vintage ... but they do pop up ... there is a sweet BIN Champ up in your size ... the thing is pretty awesome

Hi, so I just bought a new Federation 4 in Dark Brown, and after putting the bash in it, it appears to have become quite badly tapered. My other moonstone Federation 4 has not tapered at all in the year since I bought it, with the same bash. So I'm wondering if I've done something wrong. Pics below.

Nothing wrong. Are you talking about side to side taper or front to back, which can actually look like reverse taper. This is side to side.

Side to side. It seems like the hat shrunk when I was putting the shape into it, because I used de-ionised water to wet the crown.

I'm assuming you were going for something like a "raiders" bash.If so,it looks pretty good to me,I don't see much taper.Different hats will take a crease differently o you might take it back to open crown and redo it or I suspect it might relax some over time.

Yes, but when I bought the same hat in Moonstone a year ago and put the same creases in it, it didn't react the same way. I'm assuming Akubra use the same block, so surely I should get the same results?

It's not the hat/felt that's burning. It's the alcohol fumes that burns just above the felt - close enough to singe the long, stray hairs, but not enough to burn the hat, if done right. When I made the hat in my avatar at Buckaroo Hatters, it was "just touched" with a fine emery-pad after singeing - and I have done the same on a few hats I have re-blocked and pounced with good results. Different hatters use different methods, though - so ... :)

One thing I have figured out is that if I run the side ceases back a little farther I can get better, straighter lines. The Fed can be a little tricky and moon is absolutely right about the lack of consistency with Akubra.

I also don't really see the taper either though.
