Does the bash rest on the top of your head?
I now have my first hat, which is a wool felt job that I like alright, however I've noticed a something of a furrow in what's left of my hair that matches the center dent of my hat. So as I walked last night I pushed out the center dent and kept on walking and found that my hat fell onto my ears after a few steps. So, I thought I'd ask if the bash on one's hat is intended to rest on the head? The sweat band is fabric and the fit is pretty good though it loosens up some after I wear it a while. I thought a leather sweat might behave differently.
Some do, some don't. Many of us prefer the higher crown heights (5 1/2" plus when open) for just this reason. However, many of the shorter crown hats, such as Stetson Gun Club or some low crown pork pies will not clear your head. Many teardrop creases have a little dome in the middle to accomodate your head. I have a couple of hats that leave the furrow you're talking about - especially in the summer when you sweat a bit.
Having said that, a hat should be fully supported by the sweat band. It should rest on your head with the sweat band gripping your head, not fall down so the top of the hat is holding it up. A leather sweat band with a good fit will be much better than a cloth sweat in this regard.
