First fur felt

This is my first post here and I'm thinking about getting my first fur felt hat. I'm really liking the Akubra Squatter - I like how it has a wider brim and it seems like you can get a lot of different looks out of it by the way you bash the crown. I plan on using the hat for hiking and walking in the rain. The Squatter seems like it could be a good hat to face the elements in but it's versatile enough to also look more formal depending on how you're dressed.

My big dilemma is to choose a color. I really want to buy from David Morgan and they currently offer it in Mid-Fawn and Moonstone. Now at first I was dead set on Moonstone (I'm trying to avoid looking too much like Indiana Jones and I really like how light grey just seems to go with everything if I were to dress in nicer clothes than hiking attire) but now I'm leaning towards Mid-Fawn. As much as I like the light grey, I just can't picture going on hikes with it and allowing it to face a lot of weather. I think I'd be too worried about messing it up, whereas the Mid-Fawn I wouldn't mind getting a little dirty. So which color would be better for when I plan on wearing the hat? Does anyone have a Moonstone or light grey hat that they go hiking/camping/face the elements in or should Moonstone be reserved more for more formal dress?

Welcome. I will say for the hiking, the mid-fawn color is the ticket. Moonstone is a dressier color IMO. I'd get the Moonstone in a different model because of the brim size of the Squatter. It is a good outdoor brim length but a tad wide for "suiting" up or just more dressier occasions. The DM Squatter comes with grommets for stampede string attachment = to me, less dressier. Think Moonstone Fed4 or Stylemaster....

Thanks, gtdean48, yeah I'm thinking more and more that Mid-Fawn is the way to go. I guess at first I was just not very excited about a brown hat but the thought is warming up to me. I'll probably pull the trigger on it within the next couple of days!

What is this? Where can I get one of these?

I am hoping someone on the forum can help me ID and/or locate one of these:

napping_comb.jpg

I think it's a napping comb; used by hatters for raising the nap on felt halts (I think...?)

Does anyone out there know if I have ID'd this correctly and/or where I can get one of these?

Thanks!

Is there an effective difference between Lexol and Armorall? Both claim to do similar actions, but the latter seems to be more cost effective by volume.

I don't even use Armorall on vinyl or rubber. The silicone in it, I've been told, is not good for either one. There are water-based vinyl/rubber protectants like Meguiar's product, the one that used to be called "Clean, Shine, and Protect." I use that on the vinyl in my car and to doll up the tires.

Lexol is for the leather inside the car, and my sweatbands or any other leather.

Thanks, guys. (and oops...) Armorall does seem to have variations with different functions, but I'm going to go out today and see if I can track down some Lexol.

I see you live in South Dakota and if you have a good sized Feed Store near you, many times they carry saddlery and supplies for harness care. I get all of my harness care supplies at the feed store where I buy my feed for my horses.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: beware Lexol if you have any concerns about your hot forehead being in close and prolonged contact with several carcinogenic chemicals. For the love of Pete, just use some shea butter!

That is actually a really nice hat. I also do think grey is a good choice for a color that you can get away with wearing with many different color clothing. Nice website that you are finding that hat on also! When you obtain that hat, post up a few pictures of it please!

Well i finally have the hat.. They didn't have grey anymore, so i settled with black.

here a pic:

How does it look? Honest please..

Will post better pics of the hat
