The UK is an eighth of a size below. Perhaps other countries are as well.

This is a 58cm, 7 1/4 US hat, if that's what you thought you bought. The 7 1/8 is the UK size. For example, I'm a 57, but the UK size i wear is a 7, not a 7 1/8 like the US.

With vintage hats the size listed on the tags can be deceiving. Hats (actually the leather sweatbands) stretch and shrink. If its a bit tight just wear it a couple of time and you may find it stretches back out. If it's a bit loose wear it a couple times sweating into the sweatband. It may very well shrink to fit.

I won a DM Akubra Adventurer in an auction, in excellent condition. It’s a 57. I measure 57. However, my Akubra size is a 58. This hat feels a little tight, and after wearing it for about an hour or two I start getting a headache. I’m open to trying things, as I paid a fraction of the price of a new one. But I’m also reluctant to start on anything that might damage it, in case nothing works and I end up selling it.

I’ve read through what I could find here in previous threads and also watched a couple of YT videos from KTG Hats and Hat Life about how they approach the problem.

I really don’t think I want to try stretching it. From what I’ve gathered, that seems to be futile and also likely to alter the shape of the hat, which I’m really pleased with.

Has anyone snipped the reed/wire on a modern Akubra (ideally an Adventurer or Fed) with good results? Did it make it more comfortable? Did it adversely affect the integrity or look of the hat? Did you just snip it, or completely remove it?

I’m also interested in replacing the ribbon on it. Any chance a ribbon would have a substantial effect on tightness, or should I be mainly concerned with the sweatband and reed?

Yeah, that's the deal with Akubras, they shrink. Personally, I don't bother with them anymore. Not worth the (literal) headache.

I don't see how cutting the reed is going to change the tightness of the hat, the reed ideally is supposed to bell out from the opening of the hat. Nor does the ribbon have any effect.

There are so many options for a better Indy hat.

Depend, post some photos. I find a clean sponge and warm water do the trick most of the time. Was this hat stored in a closet?

What’s it look like on the inside? If the organic growth is just on the surface, it’s salvageable, if not, it’s probably time for the dip

Im thinking its time for dissassembly and a thorough gas bath ( or two or three) should get you back into a servicable hat Some of those orange and bluish spots almost look like a dye bleed. Back when the Urban Cowboy feathered hatbands were big, we used to see splotches like that after someone got theirs rained on or sweated badly ( swap meet "Artists" used to made feathered hatbands that were colored with food dyes)... some of the cheap dyed feathers ran pretty easily when damp.

Take the sweatband and liner out and treat them too while youre at it. A good woolite bath for the liner and a decent leather cleaning with saddle soap and then something like Pecards leather treatment for the sweatband ( get the leather really cleaned and get some moisture back in it). If the leather is badly dried, cracked, or stained from sweat and mold it may be simplier to just get a new sweatband and liner .. several Etsy sellers offer nice made to size lambskin sweats that are ready to sew in.

I think its potentially salvageable... good luck

Sure will... I'm in Turkey now and know that customs will hold this hat forever on its return trip. So my next door neighbors are going to London the middle of March. They would be happy to take it and pick it up when it's finished, and bring it back in April.

So it's a little bit of a wait, but not bad...I was thinking of taking it, this Summer. So this is alot sooner than that.

I'll definitely be back here with some pictures. The Hat Smith there said he thought he could make me happy with this hat and add many more years of life to it. So we will see...I think Lock & Co are so famous for their service and they certainly seem dedicated to the hats that their customers buy.

Looking forward to this...

Dropping a note to fill in what's happening with my Lock & Co Sandown.

I'm going to do a post, the first week in June with those "before" pics taken in Feb. and after pics. My next door neighbors did take the hat to London, and did drop it off at Lock & Co.. The Hat Smith there took about 2 weeks with the hat. The manger. of Lock & Co called me to let me know, the hat was finished, and looked like new. And they reinforced and fur felt that was thin from use/age. They also sowed a new satin lining in to make it look as great on the inside as it does on the outside. The original Sandown didn't have a lining. Although I remember the Sandown in Goldfinger did have a satin lining. The mang. also assured me the repair bill of £99, was waived and totally complimentary.

My friends who dropped the hat off had to go to Spain and a few other things. They picked the hat up this week and will return here in Turkiye on June 2nd. I am very excited to welcome this hat home, and check out Lock's work.

As ssid earlier, I will post, before and after pics. Not here..put on its own thread. Maybe on "What hat are you waiting for" or maybe on a Lock & Co thread. Where do you think?

Boy, was my face red (and not from wearing the hat) when, while checking the stitching inside the crown, I found two pieces of foam spacers (I should be banned just for that). Guess what, hat is not as tight anymore. 58 would still be better, but this is totally ok (for now anyway).

BTW, not looking for an "Indy hat." In fact, once I decided I was keeping it, I immediately swapped out the traditional ribbon for something completely different. I just liked the hat and its dimensions and couldn't pass up the deal. The thing looks like it was never worn.

So I received the hat today. Gave it a good steam like you all suggested. I think it's really nice. Certainly feels like beaver or rabbit but definitely not wool. I took some photos and the hat is stamped AUG 1961. Check it out:
