I do the sides of my head in pin curls facing toward my face, (pretty small, in rows, with about 15-20 on each side), and the back I do in about 5 rows of 2 or 3 curls that I just wrap around my finger, stick a bobby pin in the bottom, and pull my finger out. The ends stick out in the back sometimes, but it doesn't seem to matter much in the end. My hair is a little below shoulder length and has a side part, and I curl right up to the part on the smaller side but not the bigger side. In the back, the top row of curls is usually a little over half way up my head. I usually get my hair wet in the shower before I set my hair even when I'm not actually washing it, but otherwise I mist it as I go, and I hold all the curls in place with bobby pins. It takes a little less than an hour.

I also have bangs that go down to my eyes when not styled, and I was trying to grow them out, but I've been rolling them up into 2 stand-up pin curls that face out toward my face, and when I brush them out together, curving the brush under and toward my face as I go, it makes a kind of bumper bang that adds the illusion of the '40s height. I actually really like it!

I use a wide-tooth comb to brush it out, which leaves it in puffy curls on the sides and looser curls in the back. If I want the sides to be less puffy, I'll use a finer comb or brush. I usually pin each side back with a bobby pin or hair comb, which leaves it in a puff of curls that starts just below my ears and comes down to my shoulders. The back comes down a little longer in curls that start about half way down my head. I've only been using this pattern for a little while, but I really like it and it looks very '40s.

I looked for a photo but couldn't find anything close enough. Sorry if I got carried away and made that too long (-:
