I know I`ve had a lot of space on this thread recently, and don`t want to clog up the thread, but if you will allow me to display my last felt for 2009

Personally I don't want to see any more of your dang hats!!!!!!!!!lol I could barely control the jealousy with the last one and now this newest one is just insanely sharp.

Wow, can you take any close-up photos of the brim work?

The current ones are slightly out-of-focus at the brim edge, and if I didn't know better I'd have thought it was a Cavanagh edged hat from looking at them :eek:.

I have to say I was very surprised by the over-welt finish. I hesitated for a long time because I though it would give the hat a `casual` finish, different from the `dressy` look I wanted, but I have to say that the finish is so fine, you cannot see the stitching by the naked eye at two feet away, and even struggle closer. Art seems to have perfected his welting technique and skills, and is turning out some very fine hats. The finish as well is so soft and the feel cannot be described in words...

I had asked for a lightweight, but it does seem like a dress weight (which is actually better with me)...so I`m wondering if Art has even perfected his skills on the dress weight (I think the welts were only avaliable on lightweights)...

If it's like my blue smoke Jazzman varient, Art called it "suede" and that's what it felt like to me.

I have all three brim finishes from Art: overwelt, underwelt, and bound. I think they all look dressier than a raw edge.

I looked on the VS website but I couldn't find anywhere showing all the different colours offered. I realise pictures don't do justice, but I'd still like to generally like to see the difference between the different colours offered.

And secondly, can anyone show a comparison between granite grey and blue smoke? Art suggested granite grey for me several months ago but I quite like the blue grey as a hat colour so I'd like to see how they compare.

And finally, as a suggestion for anyone posting pictures here, could they please state the colour? I know some do, but not everyone does and it makes it frustrating for envious viewers. ;)

Granite grey and blue smoke are very different. Granite grey is much darker, aside from being a brownish grey. Blue smoke is a light greyish blue. If you search this thread, my VS Dingus is granite grey, the Jazzman varient is blue smoke.

Keep in mind that when you order from Art he sends you swatches of all his felt colors, so you can make the decision yourself based on what you're holding in your hand. Although that isn't fool-proof either as, from my experience, the hat ends up looking slightly lighter than the felt sample. -M

Is there anyone who can enlighten me what is the difference between silvermist and staple powder?
Silverbelly = light grey
Silvermist = light blue grey
Blue smoke = light blue gray but darker than silverbelly
Staple powder???

Art's swatches are helpful, but they are small.

Best bet is to surf the dickens out of this Hall of Fame thread. You'll see most hat colors a number of times. Most people will make note of the color.

The nature of our photography skills and the variables with computer monitors make an exact likeness tough.

I have an Art silverbelly (see page 74). In one photo it looks gray-ish, in the other more beige-ish. And that's actually a good representation of the hat color. With many of these fairly neutral hat colors, the light that you're in, the jacket you're wearing, will pull out different color aspects of the hat. The ribbon will also make a difference.

The lighter colors and the gray colors are toughest to capture in photo IMO.
Mojave looks different in almost every photo I've seen of it.

Blue Smoke is indeed a cool gray that leans bluish.
Granite is a very warm gray that leans brownish.

Either hat will go with most anything, but if you wear more blue- Blue Smoke. If you wear more gray and brown- Granite.

Poke through here. Page 44 has a hat made for Tom-n-Perris. He's an excellent photog and it's a good shot of a Blue Smoke hat.

The granite is much tougher to photo. There are several in this thread, and they look different everytime. A friend of mine has one and it's very nice.

I think NotBogart has some nice outdoor shots of an Art in Granite that seemed pretty accurate.

JauntyOne's posted pics above also show a pretty good side by side.

Thanks for those pictures. I definitely prefer blue smoke over granite seeing that. I like cold colours in general since it matches my character. Now I just have to decide between blue smoke and silverbelly.

Having looked at a few photos of silverbelly, I conclude that blue smoke is the colour for me. Goes with most things I wear, and in summer I'll just have to hope that the sun is so bright that people will be too blinded to notice the potential clash between blue smoke and my beige jacket.
