I think a separate thread would be worthwhile. It would be interesting to see VS Hats and the outfits people wear with them. I think rummaging through the What are you wearing today thread to find these specific subject posts would be a waste of one's valuable time. Let us know with a link on this thread if such a thread develops, thanks.

Point well taken. I humbly suggest posting pics of full attire with VS hats right here in the Hall of Fame.
I'll start with yesterday's casual outfit.

VS Dove w/ 19 L black ribbon. Goatskin jacket and mountaineering boots.

Ohhh, oh! Into the drink goes the VS!

Accident - my VS went into the lake just an hour ago. The dogs and I were playing on the dock. I throw the fetching dummy into the water and my PWD's eagerly jump in, swim and retrieve. This "play" is part of our water work for water trial testing. We continue right up to when the ice forms on the lake the dogs to "play"/practice. As you imagine my VS "jumped" off my head, when my dogs and I were tussling before another retrieve and went into the drink - the lake. It went far enough for me to consider having the dogs fetch the hat. I thought about how to impress upon the dogs to be gentle when picking the hat up in their mouths and reconsidered. I removed my shoes, jumped in and fetched the hat. By now the hat was 1/2 submerged. I shook the hat brushed the leather band off, put it back on my head. I needed to pick up the dogs and my toys, put them away, and head in to check out the consequences.

I quickly treated the leather and warmed up my steamer. I brushed the felt of any particles. Then I started on the steaming of the open crown bucket VS hat. Here are a couple of pics after steaming/creasing whilst it is drying. I hope it drys swiftly and without any color spots. I hope.

The hat takes a dunking and keeps on trucking. When it is completely dry I will ammend the post.

Clothes changed and finally dry and warm after the cold water wade, Eric -

Eric, sorry to hear about that. You may want to check for watermarks JUST BEFORE the hat dries. You know, when it's just slightly damp. If there are watermarks, it's worth a try to sprinkle some water on them to diffuse them again. Btw, how's the liner doing?

I bet that beaver will be just fine. If it were mine I would let it dry on my noggin.

Wow..it was in the water for a while to get the crown so soaked but please, don't worry Sir, the hat isn't harmed. Just let it dry without doing anything to it. Shut the steamer off for a while. If there is any staining ( I doubt) just spray the entire exterior of the hat with clean water & let it dry again. The odds are it's going to be fine.

I have had a similar experience with my Cattleman and one of my horses. It's taken two complete immersions in the stock tank at the stables thanks to one of my horses. Like you, I was able to re-set the crease and found if I gave it a good hard brushing just BEFORE it was totally dry it did not leave any water marks. Thats a well made hat , made from good felt so I think you will be just fine. BTW, I pulled out the liner on my Cattleman since it has now become a "barn" hat which is what I bought it for anyway

I am starting practice in moments and a few of my gymnasts are reading my previous post. They are laughing at the thought of me chasing my hat and dogs in the freezing waters. ..... I am laughing with them.

Thanks for the info Art and Art Fedora lovers. It was soaked. The water temp is very low, nearly freezing and it took some time to rid myself of shoes and prepare myself for the shock of jumping chest deep. Your advise is heart warming that all is to be ok. Emotionally I needed that - cheers. Rationally, I am ok, as really the only issue should be potential water spots on the ribbon. I have had hats dump into the water before. It is the hat challenge with living near the lake. Spraying clean water if spots show on the felt is good knoweldge to keep in mind.

The liner is grand - no spots. Not even any wear for the hours I have spent in the hat so far. If only I wore as well as my hat liner - no marks, wrinkles, spots...... I love the rich brown liner.

I will re-inspect the hat when I get back from the gym at 11:00pm this evening. Update at 11:00pm.

Eric, I am confident your little hat dunking session today will see no harm befall your lovely lid. One word of caution, however, and you probably already know this, is to be certain to use distilled water if you need to spray down the hat. In my experience even clean drinking water can leave behind spots and residue due to ions and mineral impurities. Additionally, I find that less is more when it comes to working out any potential water marks or stains on the felt or ribbon with the distilled water.

Hope all of this will be unnecessary, of course, as I expect to see the hat on your noggin again tomorrow!

I'm sure your hat will be fine. Both my Vs have taken heavy rain and have been literally dripping soaked. Air dry, fold the sweatband out the other way and you're good. Also, a lapel cord might be a good idea for you since this, as you are near a lake, could happen again.

I came home late last evening and went right away to check on my "swimming hat." Could not be more pleased - the fedora is looking perfect. The sage wisdom Art and you folks provided about the beaver felt and VS hats ability to survive the elements ring true.

The above pics are taken this morning. I have not brushed or modified the crease of the hat felt yet. I inspected the liner and leather and they show no signs of yesterday. I plopped an native american ceramic bowl off the dresser, onto the chair and took the pics. No prep at all. Room light should show what I am posting about.

Pretty, styling and durable! The beaver felt, ribbon, liner, leather and artisty are intact and show no signs of wear. Man I love wearing this hat.
