Just off the phone with the man himself and now I'm really excited. You gents helped confirm my decision for a Playboy-esque hat in the lightweight black cherry. I told Art to work his magic with the ribbon.

Love the dove VS fedora sir! Natty attire.

I wore the VS Stratoliner inspired fedora this afternoon. I am not as well dressed.

Nik, you are setting a very high bar on this thread. Keep it up.

I'm in a bit of a pickle, I am trying to decide on what felt color to go with for my first custom. I would really like a color that will go with any color clothing I will wear. Anyone have suggestions? Silverbelly, dove, blue smoke, granite, ivory?

Love all kinds of pickles - all your choices have merit and can be applied in most situations. Please refer to the many posts of Nik (Rabbit) and his gorgeous poster like accumulations of the many colors for representations in the flesh. Jonny, I suggest that you describe to Art what clothing you intend on wearing and the situations you are frequently wearing them in. He will do the magic of guiding you. I have done this on many occasion and have appreciated his learned expertise and insight.

My fav - it changes all the time! Perhaps other posters will have sage wisdom for you. Eric -

Jonny, I was wondering the same. The more I thought, the more I leaned to the dove and silverbelly or silvermist. Blue smoke and granite are darker and would work with more dress stuff, but to me would be a bit more noticeable or standoutish or severe with lighter colored shirts. That is not true with the three I lean to, and that is shown by Rabbit's pics. He can dress the dove color up nicely and yet, if he had on a linen shirt in say 60 degree weather, I think that color goes great. I am leaning to a thinner ribbon and a more casual look in silverbelly which to me gives me a thought it will be more versatile

Since you will be getting additional ones in the future (you know it, I know it, and so do the rest of the "addicted" who read this thread), I would suggest focusing on a specific combination of clothes rather than trying for a "Universal" hat. For example, do you often wear browns? Look specifically for a colour that compliments those. Or blues and grays, etc.

And if you haven't done so yet, order a set of colour swatches.

That can help with the decision process.

Eric - Thank you for the help, I will definitely be getting in touch with Art soon and getting his take on it. As memphislawyer stated, Nik's dove looks great, is yours you posted dove as well?

Don - I have felt swatches that Art sent with the conformer...that has only made my decision harder! It's somewhat hard for me to picture the small swatches as a full sized hat. Thanks for the advice as well.

Good thing I'm on my day off, it looks like I have a lot of looking to do through this thread, thanks for the help from those who have answered and would love to hear from others too!
