Han Solo was the true hero. At least until they emasculated him by having Greedo shoot first. RIP Star Wars, 1977-97.

Amen, brother!

George Lucas simply got lucky with Star Wars that first time and it was all downhill from there.
Have you seen his final atrocity "Red Tails" ? His fingerprints are all over that ... it's just horrendous.. Quite simply the worst war film I've ever seen. Period.

You wouldn't believe that he was the guy who filmed second unit and contributed ideas for some of The Godfather's most memorable scenes.

Wow! I do find that hard to believe ... (but I do if you're saying it). Shame on him all the more then.

To my knowledge, at the very least, he did the inserts shots for the atmospheric 'We're going to mattresses' scenes, and it was his idea to build the tension during the hospital assassination scene by inserting run-out footage from existing corridor scenes where the actors had left the shot leaving it empty.
There should be some sort of law prohibiting directors fiddling with what are already demonstrably great films. I saw The Social Network on its opening night over in Douglas, NC, and then just two months later I saw a screener DVD, and some great lines had been cut and the sound track changed for no apparent reason. [huh]

I've been watching the DVD of Red Tails drop in price in Sainsburys... I refuse to pay a fiver for it, though for three quid I'd buy it just to see the jackets and the planes. I've gathered it's no Memphis Belle...

You can see my verdict on it on Amazon.ca and Amazon.co.uk - under "Horrific".

Yes, it's worth 3 quid just to see the jackets and theatre-made patches. The costuming is the one good thing about it (and it's very authentic IMO).
But you'll also need a large scotch to go with it. And some paracetamol.

Assume you don't incl Empire Strikes Back in there.... ;) Best SW movie to date!
I have hopes that Mr Abrams will turn it all around for the next one... He's done a good job with the Trekkies. Anyway...

Looking forward to Spielberg and Hank's HBO WW2 Airwar series... 10 episodes of A-2s and other flight jackets to drool over and likely a lot more engaging than Red tails.
Also John Woo's Flying Tigers project... Great to see M422s in action. However based on his last foray into dramatic WW2 action movies, I am not certain it will wi many oscars...
Still, some good celluloid flight jacket action to look forward too.

I think the key the ESB is that it was the one Lucas didn't direct. I guess he felt he'd had his thunder stolen, so decided to ruin every one since all by himself. :D

Lucas was barely even on set for ESB. His contribution was oimited to the rough story outline, and that was it.

It's just as bad as Memphis Belle, which was pure fiction! Hollywood can ruin any real story.

Memphis Belle may have plenty of fiction injected into it. Many 'based on true event' films do but its an enjoyable film. Red Tails is by no means the worst film ever made. I would say that it was no less entertaining than the Red Barron for example and some of the scenes are great even if they are very George Lucas.

I totally disagree about how terrible the last Star Wars trilogy was. No it wasn't as good as the original and had less great characters but it captured the spirit of Star Wars and has some great moments. The films improved as they went on. Some times George Lucas gets it wrong and the dialogue can be dodgy too but the incredible story and world created is amazing. With all their faults, they have to be some of the best films of all time and would find it hard to choose a better trilogy.

Sorry that I have not mentioned jackets.

What's this a film site? ;) I saw Star Wars when it first came out - I've seen it a couple of times since. Always found it lifeless, poorly written and essentially empty.

And the jackets in Star Wars are nowhere near as good at Battlestar Gallactica. BOOM! And we're back on thread!;)
