Saw this one on OFAS . . . $5,000.00 starting bid . . . You read that right!

The description states: "MADE BY JOHN B STETSON TRADEMARK CEARNURTIA OF PHILADELPHIA AND GEORGE H STETSON'S NAME STAMPED ONTO THE INSIDE HAT BAND . . ."

I would love to hear what the experts have to say about this beauty.

Not an expert, just an opinion

....ALSO INCLUDES ORIGINAL SILK SCREENED HAT BOX IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. APPROXIMATELY 75-100 YEARS OLD. CONTACT SELLER FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO DISCUSS DIFFERENT SALES PRICE. ALL REASONABLE OFFERS WILL BE CONSIDERED. SHIPPING TO BE DETERMINED BY LOCATION OF PURCHASER. SHIPPING AND INSURANCETO BE PAID BY PURCHASER.
"

End of quote from the same place.
Here it is the historic value that makes the price 5k. Most probably to be purchased by a wealthy Stetson fan or historian-collector, their company museum, any other museum/collection with vintage western wear etc.
Only professional hatters can decide whether it is genuine. Whoever participates at that bidding, asks anyway for the expert opinion of a professional hatter who dealt with vintage specimens.
I don’t know how hungry the moths were in the last 75-100 years and how many contemporaries of that felt Stetson are left.
Interesting, how long a beaver felt hat can survive...

Jeez -- I just love it when a man steps out in a CEAR NURTIA BEAVER OF PHILADELPHIA hat!!!

My wife won't let me bid, but in the interest of historical research, and after extensive, diligent searching -- I believe that I have managed to ascertain the previous owner of this masterpiece of millinery!...

BTW, I once ended up with a beautiful vintage Barbisio Clear Nutria similar-type "cowboy hat" in white, long half-inch fluffy fur. Oh yeah, it's a show-stopper all right, but I gotta tell ya -- If I live to be a thousand -- I would never possess the huevos to plant that lid on my head and walk down Hollywood Boulevard with it on!!!!! Jus' sayin'...

Wow. For $5000, I think I'd need to see some better pics than those. Not to mention a certificate of authenticity. And a new car.:p

Fraud?!

How is this possible?

A '100% positive feedback' vendor in the hats biz since 16 May 2007 and already offering museum pieces made of 'CearNurtia' that grows beaver pelt - and the guy is still running around free?[huh]

This is the reason why I NEVER buy anything on e-bay, as said many times: I first met e-bay when a friend asked me to translate threatening letters to German for a similar trustworthy 'vendor' who took his money and never sent anything back. It was about some car spare parts in the value of 1000+ USD.

Another: whoever is rich enough to click-click 5000 USD away but is too poor to previously consult an expert for lets say 5-10% of the value he's gonna spend has deserved it - but still there should be some folks on his 'vendors' trail.

Don't we have an (Ex)-police officers FL thread here?

And, eBay fees are based on the starting price, right? At least he's paying for this silliness. As long as no one stumbles into the price trap, it's only the seller that suffers.
