Two quite different types of hats - a western and a stingy.

The Sovereigns aren't too unusual, but the one I've had my hands on had wonderful felt. I suspect they're a bit smaller in scale (smaller brim, lower crown) than the fedoras of the 20s and 40s, but just right and high quality for the person whom they suit.

As for the Akubra - you basically stole it!

Recieved my first Akubra

I am impressed, my first fur felt and it's an Akubra, " Cattleman", needed a little steam to shape but excellent condition. I just wish I knew the correct way to pronounce, "Akubra" ;lol; anyway I have 4 more lids coming here and I will let you know how they look.

On the move again...
The Akubra has sort of a Doc Holiday look to it from the front. And the Stetson looks like an alpine hat that my father bought up in British Columbia about 45 years ago. He still has it but never wears it. Such a shame.

Cheers!

A lady I know from Aus. pronounces it Ack-oo-brah, I am not a huge Cattleman style or vented hat fan..BUT..fantastic price on it! I have a Alpine style hat that I picked up early in my collecting. Though I like it I rarely wear it as ...well...it dosn't "go" with anything. (maybe I need leaderhossen? (sp)

Nice buys. Enjoy them!

From a native Aussie who visits the US selling black opals, it's pronounced just as it's spelled, "A-Koo-Bra."

I happened to be wearing my Federation Deluxe when he dropped by where I work, and I showed it to him. "Ah, an Akubra! Best hats in the world, mate!"

And I know he's a real Aussie because he hates Foster's. lol

Jake, my bet is that the Sovereign is a fur felt, with a velour-like finish. Probably a very nice quality hat. Question will be how the style suits you. But - remember that ribbons can be changed.

I agree that changing the ribbon would give the hat a different look. More urban, much "cooler", IMHO. It looks pretty sweet- I think it would be a great "fun" hat. Wear it on your days off with a casual flair.

links to hat pics

Thank you Gentlemen for the info, I will keep posting as the hats arrive. These are links to all of my recent purchases. I value your advice and opinions.
Check them out if you like. Thanks for the pronunciatiation guide, I think I may be getting hooked on all sorts of lids, including the Akubra. p.s. I thought the "Doc" Holiday statement was right on the money, I loved his character, cool and dangerous at the same time. Enjoy the pics I may have some cleaning up to do though.

Nice lids Jake. The Bowler is not likely vintage the tag gives that away and the wool may give you problems if it gets wet...so be cautious with it. But it is in good shape and bowlers are fun to wear in general. I had my eye on that Dobbs but have one like it so I didn't dive in. I love all of my Dobbs hats. Very nice. The last one is a puzzle...not sure what the "GVH" is about. Nice looking grey lid...and looks to be workable.

Enjoy them all! ;)

Thanks M. the bowler was more of a "just gotta have one" but I will be cautious with it since it is wool, I did not realize how sought after furfelt vintage bowlers were, they can get very pricy. I will let you know if I fiqure out what the GVH intials are for on the Stetson.
