Any Australians here would like some advice on a jacket purchase/customs invoice

Just a quick one I know how the GST work if it’s over AU$1000 companies like DHL ( this is from DHL) will hit you with a tax invoice to collect the GST plus a admin fee before they release your package, now I calculated the GST to be around $120 not disputing that, can anyone tell me what the other charges are? I just spoke to someone at DHL sounds like a rort to me, even getting hit with VAT?? It’s been a while since I’ve received anything from anywhere via DHL last time I got hit with 10% plus a $50 admin fee so I figured this time around $170 I would be owing , btw DHL couldn’t really explain it properly over the phone, should I dispute this or not, btw this is for my new Aero jacket so I’m guessing someone else here has been hit with as similar DHL invoice of late and can set my mind at ease that this is legit or are they trying one on, in case it makes a difference the jacket came to a total of AU$1100.00 not including shipping

I’m afraid I don’t have good news for you.

Earlier his year I got hit with the same import tax daylight robbery from DHL, they told me they would send the jacket back, an Aero Cafe Racer Sheene, to Aero if I didn’t pay nearly 30% extra in taxes and fees.

In the end I had to pay $295 to get the jacket released for delivery.

The jacket was just under $1200, the total was over $1500.
I was extremely annoyed as you can imagine. Bloody thieves.

Some eBay listings show what the import taxes total up to before you buy. I don't know the exact amount offhand but it's somewhere around $300 once the $1000 threshold is crossed.

Ok thanks going to have to factor this in then for any future Aero orders DHL are terrible (have had a few EMS delivered jackets lately, not 1 cent in duties go figure) had forgotten about the Netflix tax, my new jacket just cost me more

I’ve noticed that as well a AU$1000 item or jacket could cost you in excess of US$300 in tax’s and shipping at checkout , I’ve actually asked sellers to not use the EBay global shipping system if they want my sale most have obliged resulting in 0 tax or duties when it lands, assuming they don’t use DHL it’s a pity for us Aussies that’s what Aero use, it’s like DHL have a little side business going on collecting these taxes I’m sure I paid close to $100 for the privilege in admin fees, DHL are crooks, I’ve never ever been hit for any taxes or duties if a item arrives by EMS and I’ve bought many expensive watches and jackets over the years.

Technically those imports with other carriers are slipping through the system. Also many sellers declare a lower value to avoid the $1000 threshold. Aero won't do that, I've asked. It's the legit thing to do but means I can't buy from Aero as it gets too expensive.

@Thuggee it might be worth speaking to a local dealer (e.g. Pickings and Parry in Melbourne) as it might be cheaper to buy it locally.

Alternatively, get a cheap flight to Europe, and pick the jacket up from Aero directly. You could reclaim VAT as you leave the UK, avoid paying for shipping to Australia, and the price might come under the duty free limit coming into Oz. It might work out not much more.

My latest purchase, a Vanson Gambler, was via Thurston Bros and didn’t pay taxes.
From now on, all my purchases will be through them, as they declare insured value, not purchase.
Besides, they’re super helpful, top customer service. Well worth it.

I didn't get hit with that when I received my Aero Sunburst from Thurston Bros but that was back in May. I guess the tax came in July 1? Just another rort from our beloved government but until people stand up and do something about this still-convict nation, we'll just keep getting slugged by all and sundry, like ludicrous electricity prices, fuel prices and even an extra $6-$8 just to book tickets to a theatre online.

I for one HATE that ebay "Global Shipping" ! WITH A REAL PASSION !

Some sellers seem to be able to bypass it no worries , others think you're a scammer if you ask !

In case it's not bleeding obvious ebay/paypal take a BIG cut of it as the seller posts local to some designated "Pitney Bowes" home base in their country.

I do believe in the US all ebay Global Shipping goes to Kansas somewhere ? The seller gets exactly the local post cost , ebay/Pitney Bowes gets the rest.

I could quote an exhaust system for a Harley coming US Priority airmail , heavy and large , being WAY LESS than a new leather jacket by "Global Shipping" FFsake ?

And yes , I have NOT bought items because of a seller's inability to swerve the apparently compulsory "Pitney Bowes" routine.

I don't have any real problem paying taxes if they are Australian but I have only once been hit by a bill like this. For a cheap and cheerful Wested Indy jacket about 15 years ago. Nothing I have bought since, new or second hand has ever been taxed. Although I don't think I have ever paid $1000 for anything.

If you plan to spend >$1,000 then add 20 - 30% to your budget.

I believe @ProteinNerd had the same issue with a second hand jacket as the seller declared full value of the item. I’m not sure if he got away with no tax but I know there was some dramas in customs.
