I may be wrong, but

It looks much like small pieces of cork bonded together like particle board.

[huh] I THINK that may just be a property of the cellular structure of the material. Composite cork is very uniform & homogeneous in appearance.
The Cork Store offers it for everything from clutch pads (I know?!?) to flooring to insulation to fabric et al..
Where the hell is a botanist when you NEED one?
