An Introduction

Greetings!

Obviously this is my first post and I’d like to make it an introduction and a little bit of “see what you (FL) think”.

A year ago I didn’t care how I looked or dressed – then, over the holidays in ’07, I discovered cowboy/western boots. I read and researched and learned the art that is in the handmade/bespoke boot trade. I have purchased several pair of handmade and vintage boots and I’m quite proud to wear them.

In the spring I had a physical (I'm 55) and the physician advised me to lose weight and do it now! Since then I’ve lost almost sixty-five pounds and still need to lose a few more. This has triggered an interest in looking better overall, e.g. clothing. My work (the IT department in a University) allows me to dress very casually, which, when overweight, I took to the extreme. Recently, I’ve invested in several nice sport coats and upgraded jeans (yes, I’m still a die-hard jeans type). Now I’m interested in hats – nice fedoras! I work near Hippodrome Hatters in Baltimore, so I stopped in and talked to the proprietor and tried on hats to see how I looked – not bad, thank you! He was very insistent on a black hat and I was very uneducated altogether, so I bid him farewell and told him I may be back. Since then I’ve done some research on the subject, done a lot of lurking on the Lounge and I’ve come up with what I think may be a plan. When I began my interest in boots, I bought an inexpensive pair to wear to see if it really suited me. It did suit me, but those boots lasted about two months and took up residence in the “clothes most likely to go to Goodwill”. Well, I’m going to try the same approach with the fedora. Last night I scored a Scala Milan fur felt grey fedora (for $50 - shipped) that I can wear to see how it works for me. While I’m wearing that I can continue to learn and get a feel for what I really want by reading the forum.

So, sorry for the long-winded post and thanks for reading! All comments welcome.

Welcome to the Lounge!
It will not be long till you will be wanting a custom fedora!
We have several great hatters that are members here, anyone of them will be more than happy to help you with a fedora [or western].
Good luck and let us see what your new hat looks like.

Yeah, I know... I can already feel the bug. What is the general cost of a custom fedora?

MrHughes, welcome to The Fedora Lounge, and welcome to the world of hats!

That was a decent price for the Scala Milan. I have a friend who has the Scala Venice, which is part of that line the Milan is in, and he finds the hat to be comfortable and of a decent quality.

Thanks everyone for the welcome!

Dewhurst - I thought the price was pretty good - when auction came up on eBay I priced the Milan on several sites and saw it was an okay deal. We'll see when the hat arrives...
