"America: Freedom to Fascism" Moved from The Motion Picture

Aaron Russo's latest project. He is the producer of 'Trading Places', 'The Rose', etc. (First brought Led Zepplin to the U.S. too!)

This film is a REAL eye opener. I was privileged to see a screening in Tucson some months ago and got to speak with Aaron about this subject. He was on his way to Cannes where this one got rave reviews.

Go out of your way to seek this one out and view it intently.

I've seen Aaron Russo speak at a small gathering a few years ago. He gives new meaning to the word "Bombastic" but he has a wonderful sense of humor.

Michael Moore just never felt like he really could've done all those feats like Sean Connery! Is Sean in this new movie you're talking about too or is it a spy movie?

New Member, methinks you've confused Michael with Roger! AFFF is not a spy drama or a James Bond knock-off, it's a documentary about the state of affairs in America today. Michael Moore is, of course, another film documentarian. Roger Moore will, of course always be the Saint!

An irresponsible choice of words. We are no where near an authoritarian hierarchical government, nor are we headed in that direction. The government is questioned and ridiculed 24/7. Just a short time ago the people of California recalled a leader who they felt was irresponsible and needed to be pulled. To even mention Fascism in the same sentence with America (USA) is a joke.

This reeks of somebody's little soapbox to whine that they are not getting things their way.

You're better off watching The History Channel.

On another note, we might need to keep this forum for real motion pictures. These propaganda films inspire political posts rather than film making. I like to keep all the politics in The Observation Bar, so that those who are trying to avoid politics can just stear clear of there. Members coming to this forum are not looking for politics....but they're encountering a fair share.

I don't need to say a word to describe this motion picture. The film will speak for itself. It was entered in Cannes Film Festival and received rave reviews. It will play in theatres around the country this summer. It is produced by an award winning HollywoOd film producer. It is what it is. It is a motion picture mentioned in a Motion Picture thread. Like Ayn Rand's "The Virtue of Selfishness", the title is provocative for a reason I would imagine.

I'm with MK on this one. I've been hearing fascism screamed quite a bit lately to describe this country and its government, and frankly I'm getting a bit tired of it. Either the people throwing the word around have no idea what it really means or they're engaging in agitprop for their own dark purposes. Between that and people comparing President Bush to Hitler, I've had it up to my neck. Please don't insult my intelligence. Go read a history book about Germany in the 1930s and 40s and see if the comparisons really hold up. And as for getting rave reviews at the Cannes Film Festival, I couldn't care less. Of course audiences there would love it. Knowing who usually attends, Russo's film was probably akin to preaching to the choir.

If I want to discuss current politics, environmentalism, or any other "hot button" issue I'll go to the Observation Bar. I come here to read about and discuss films and filmmaking. To quote Louis B. Mayer, "If you want to send a message, call Western Union."

Baggers, but my history book says Fascism was an Italian political movement commencing about 1914 and gaining government control in 1922. That's during a period when a Constitutional Republic was founded in (Weimar) Germany and fascist elements later began to work towards it's destruction (they called themselves National Socialists). They of course succeeded in completely destoying a Constitutional government and then a society and then a nation - and most of a continent!

Maybe that's why film like A:FFF are important to see, so that one might learn about how these things happen - even in peaceful Constitutional Republics. I for one happen to enjoy freedom and peace and am glad that our society allows filmmakers to create such works - leaving the individual viewer free to decide the merits of it's content. I equally enjoy such forums where things such as this come up for discussion. Thanks for participating! Now we're talkin'!!!

I agree with MK here. But rather than move these discussions to The Observation Bar, you could create create a separate forum devoted solely to the discussion of current events/issues. It's not a perfect solution. I'm sure a lot of people (like me) hit the "New Posts" button when they come to the lounge. It would help, though. Just a thought...

Yes, that is in the Golden Era that we love so much. But that's not what we're discussing. We're talking about a film with an inflammatory title that presumably deals with current events. The fact that one of the terms in the title refers to a political movement that was important in the 20s and 30s doesn't make it a Golden Era discussion. Radio was largely developed and reached its zenith (sorry) in the Golden Era. That doesn't make discussions about the relative talents of Rush Limbaugh and Al Franken relevant to that period. I'm not trying to take over or chase anyone away; I'm a relative late-comer here myself. But in my humble opinion, this sort of thing kind of defeats the purpose of this board.

My preference would be to keep our discussions relevant to the central theme of the board. There are countless venues on the web to debate virtually anything one might wish to. But I'm not in charge. If we have to have these discussions, it would be better to have a separate forum devoted exclusively to current events (politics, global warming, etc.). Those who wanted to talk about those issues could do so freely.

Hi Reno, I thought this is a Motion Picture thread. There was a previous movie entered that also is "current event". I added another movie that will soon be in theatres. There is no debate, per se. There is a discussion, which presumably is what we do here. If no one had an interest in the subject (one way or another) they wouldn't even take time to type a response. But apparently, by what I'm seeing there are a few who wish to discuss this subject or at least lend their opinions. Which, again, is the purpose of a discussion group. Whether anybody actually views this film, makes me no nevermind (I wish everyone would - so we could discuss it further!) but, in the mean time, nothing here detracts from the discussion elsewhere on the board about hats, jackets and powder-puffs.

I for one find it fascinating beyond all imagination that such things are so provocative. Folks, it's a movie. Privately funded. In a free country. No animals were injured in the making of this motion picture! I positively guarantee no one will be injured by discussing it either. -dixon cannon
